I knew one girl named Yona but it seems uncommon. How do people feel about this?

I know of two Yonas. They are Yona, not Yonah.

As my dd would say, but this is really blunt, "Why would you name your kid a name that could be for a boy or a girl?"

A few nights ago we were talking about names and that's when she said it.

The truth is that Yona is mostly used for male, Zissel is mostly used for female (I don't know of any male zissel besides rav simcha zissel), and Simcha is predominantly male ( and is more common than Yona as a female).

Depends on the circles. I wouldn’t do it but if you love it, go for it

Almost all the Yonah’s I know are boys or men. In Tanach Yonah was a Navi. When the kids learn in school that on Yom Kippur we read Yonah, it’s a man. That could get your dd teased if she’s a girl with the same name.
I know one Yonah who’s a woman. There’s nothing wrong with that but I wouldn’t give the name to my own baby daughter. If you like the sound or the meaning you can do Yonit or Yonina.

Sure. It works.

I don't think it's a name likely to get her teased, whether it's super common in your circles or not. It's just a name and it's not a weird or unheard of name.

Only Yona. It's a more Sephardic or modern to use it as a girl's name, and they don't use the H. Yonah/Jonah is a man.

I think of it as a male name, because of tanach, but in reality I know one female Yona, one male Jonah, and the name itself ends with "uh" and therefore objectively sounds female

Sure it will, when they learn the story of Yona. It’s like naming a girl Moshe

I also know one female YONA but would not feel comfortable naming my own daughter that. Also the person I know is 70+. Idk any young girls with that name

Growing up, we had a girl in our school named chanina. Can’t imagine how a parent can do that to a kid.
