Allowance? No. I'm not a kid. We have joint accounts. I spend what I need to. Very aware of our income and budget.

Allowance?? We just pay our bills, and if anything left we decide what to do with it. If I need something I buy it.

No. Although I'm a sahm and dont bring in any income, it is understood between us that both of us will spend responsibly, and discuss larger purchases before buying them.

Nope. We both work and if anything im usually the one with cash and I give to my husband if he needs some.
Most women are not living that way op. Judt to rralize, even if you dont work, ypu should still have access to your account/s.

Allowance? Do you mean budget? Like alloted amount for these things according to the plan?

Most people I know use credit cards, but those using cash end up more disciplined.

Allowances are for children, not spouses.

We both spend responsibly, knowing how much we earn vs how much our expenses are.

No. I'm the sole earner but I don't give my husband an allowance either.

I have a credit card that I can use as I wish

but I prefer cash so he gives me a set amount each week and I use it as I wish

I remember often my mother would ask my father if she can have some money for the day/week
Is that allowance?

Does he ground you if you misbehave? Do you have to ask him permission to stay up past your bedtime?

Hell no. My dad this at a point when we were growing up with my mom. It's gross. Very controlling and infantalizing.

No to allowance.
Any bigger purchase I check with my DH.
As far as I am aware it is very uncommon for a wife to have an allowance

Oh calm down everyone. Bad choice of words. She probably just means he budgets a certain amount for spending per week. My father would go to the bank so my mother didn’t have to, and give her a wad of cash for spending for the week. They both found it easier that way rather than keeping track of credit cards.

same here. my mom would call it her wages lol...

I also can’t help but cynically laugh when I think about how those few hundred dollars covered all her weekly expenses, (and she usually put some away to save up for bigger expenses ) while that amount today doesn’t even begin to cover groceries for my family, let alone everything else it takes to run a household.

We discuss finances together, besides our main expenses like utilities,
Anything over a certain amount I double check that we can afford it…
Plus I don’t just spend regularly so it’s usually for the kids shoes or something we need just make sure we have the money for it… I guess I ask for money that way.

OP, I really hope this is just a bad choice of words.
You shouldn’t need an ‘allowance’.
Even when I have a budget, I don’t consult with my husband first if food or clothing went over the budget for one month.
Large purchases, we discuss first.
Everything else, we both have debit cards, and use responsibly as needed.
Every few months we go through our expenses and reassess. But it’s a joint activity/decision.
