I'm looking for a yeshiva for my son that has a lot of English classes. Hes ok in Gemara but he finds it somewhat boring. However, he loves to learn all English subjects and is very frustrated that his yeshiva doesnt offer enough. He's a very good kid, follows rules well, has only a flip phone, is very happy being frum. We are jpf and I want him to go to a yeshiva but the only schools that have a serious English department are more modern schools. He also, is a little shy and nerdy and doesn't make friends easily. He wouldn't be happy socially in a cool crowd. So does a school for him exist in the tristate area?

Does yesodei in queens have good English? I think it might be the type you’re looking for. Ohavei Torah in riverdale has an excellent English dept, but the crowd might be too cool for him.

There are probably lots of schools that fit your description. You describe yourself as just plain from, but honestly your post as a whole reads yeshivish, which might explain why you're having a hard time finding a school. If you're willing to drop labels and just look at the school and the boys who attend and not worry "what will people think" there are quite a few schools. I'm not trying to mock or belittle here- yeshivah can be a wonderful derech, but it demands conformity. Changing to a different type of school requires a real mindset shift, and it can be difficult in certain circles. But there are really good boys in all these schools. Maybe a mix, but enough your son should be able to find friends who are a positive influence.
In no particular order:
DRS
MTA
Yesoday Hatorah
MAY
Probably a lot more I haven't thought of

Good luck!

I think some of the chofetz chaim high schools would fit this description. The chofetz chaim from Staten island is moving to Passaic.

Can you tell me more about this school?
To the other poster, I'm not opposed to the modern schools because of the "name". It's very important to me that my child not have a smart phone for as long as possible. If the schools allow them even at home, the pressure to let him have one would be too much. If any of the schools on the list allow only flip phones at home and school, please let me know

My son is in a chofetz chaim and only has a flip phone. There are probably some boys who do have smart phones at home though.

I agree. This is a major deal breaker for me unfortunately. And I have a smartphone and I value secular studies etc ....but BH I gromee up before there were smart phones. Can't imagine being a teen with one, especially a teen boy. Need brain cells to grow up a bit and hormones to tone down a bit before allowing the world into your pocket with door closed.

Is there someone who knows all the cc yeshivas in the tristate area that could meet with us to see what would be a good fit?

Some of them are having open houses tomorrow. The one moving to Passaic is having one. Also the one in cherry hill.

I think the boys in Ohavei Torah in Riverdale use flip phones.

The boys in Haichal and MTA in the high track could be “nerdy “ style but Smart phones are definitely allowed.

If you find a school that fits this description, please update the thread. I’m also looking for schools that don’t allow Smartphones but are more jpf or RWMO.
