I teach tracked classes. The stronger class is great. In the weaker class, there are several girls with ADHD or/and learning disabilities. The class is disrupted at least once every five minutes and it’s a struggle to keep everyone focused. I don’t feel a vibe of deliberate disrespect to me personally- it’s more that the girls simply cannot sit through a class. It’s torture for them. And they are not always encouraged to do things that are hard for them.
And yeah, back in high school, there were plenty of classes that we partied through. The ones we sat through quietly were the ones with terrifying teachers. I don’t see most teachers today attempting to terrify their students; the culture is more love and acceptance. But in that culture, students feel comfortable acting however they want. It’s a hard balance to achieve.

I’m shocked that my 9th grade daughter thinks it’s normal that the girls talk straight through class. I always tell her that I hope she’s not one of them because that is so hurtful to the teacher. This is in a very well established, solid, good school.
Have the standards really gone down? What has happened?
I also need to ask, do you find that this chutzpah level is brought home? My daughter used to be such a good girl. Truth is, she’s still a good girl but her chutzpah level, at home, is through the roof!!! I feel like she’s picking it up from the other girls, wouldn’t dare behave that way in school, but brings it home instead. |
and I am comforted as a teacher knowing it's not JUST ME or not just MY SCHOOL (believe me, I have wondered and still wonder if I should switch schools). It's such a PLEASURE to teach when girls listen and enjoy and learn! I love to teach! but sometimes I wonder if I'm in the right field. Sigh.
Usually it's not OUTRIGHT chutzpah but yeah, just talking to friends, as if I'm not there. like groups of girls. sometimes I am like - I hear five voices when I'm trying to teach! I take out my roll book and start marking down who's talking and it works to quiet most of them... for a short time only... SIGH.

what would happen if students were sent to the principal and parents would be involved and if continued kid can't come to class. my kids complain about it and I wish it would be buckled down on more, wondering why it's not?
to answer ops question I find it class specific.

There were teachers we sat through quietly because they were great at teaching. They just kept us engaged in the material. Really hard to find but they do exist.
