They employed you for an entire year? How often do the kids get lice checked? Is this typical?

Going on 6 years now. Each student gets checked every 3 weeks or so by default. Once they've been found with lice, they're checked more often as per the school's lice policy. I don't think it's so typical, a lot of schools have volunteer mothers, but we're a large school Grades 1 thru 9 with around 100 kids per year group and it was literally out of hand.

If anyone wants to do this, you can freelance. The school pay me, but it's the parents who finance a good part it with a yearly fee.

It pays well, especially if you take private work. I don't want to post my wage, but I earn 80% more then I was getting as a class teacher. Downside is, there's no holiday pay, but on the whole, I'm still better off.

I’ve become a pro at lice checking unfortunately and have thought about doing this. Can I ask how much you charge privately? You’re anonymous anyway

For a check or to clear?
It varies. If I do it in a school-and most but not all schools are happy to accommodate this-and have a bunch of checks there, it can be just $7 per check. But I have to have a minimum of 10 girls (and boys, I've been called to chadarim) at the same time.

Otherwise it's anywhere between that and $22 a clear (check is cheaper), depending if They come to my house or ask for a call-out to their house.

I don't know where you are located, I paid unfortunately as a parent! of a daughter with lice bli ein hara never to experience that again! in tri state area.
I paid way more than what you wrote above. though I paid for my child to be taken home to the checker's house, have her hair washed and combed through, then they took her back to school (school was close by). I took our whole family again to her house to be checked and I believe we still paid more for each to be looked at if I remember correctly.
It does seem like a lucrative and helpful profession, as long as you are not a germaphobe..
