But if you moved to Israel 22 years ago and didn't go to a litvish school makes sense.
Lakewood only became so big in the past ten years. The reason I knew of Lakewood when I was a kid was because we learned about kotler and I read a lot of biographies of gedolim

I was never pary of the litvish world.

I am from OOT. Way west of the Mississippi. My town has basic Jewish infrastructure and a pizza shop.
When we said out of town, we meant someone was away or they were visiting from another place.

The question is when does a place become OOT? Is Brooklyn the center of Jewish life that everything is relative to it? Are Lakewood and Monsey now central to Jewish life and extensions of Brooklyn that now they are also "in town"?
What about all the communities in between? Are they OOT, or borderline, or in-town or...?

We always called these places New Yorky. Other places have become more New Yorky since I was growing up. It's getting less comfortable to move from my hometown to Baltimore, for example, since it has become more New Yorky than we can handle long term.

I wonder where Passaic falls in.

I think it’s kinda funny to think all of ny/ nj is the same. Do you think Albany is too because it’s in ny? Because the community is more oot than all the big oot communities.

Nope my point was when I was telling family members that I am thinking of moving out of town they recommended passaic but in my mind I don’t think Passaic has the qualifications that a true out of town community has. To me it is way to similar to Lakewood, yes definitely not as big but still not oot so I wanted to hear others opinions

Have u been here? I recommend checking in out/coming for a shab. If you’re looking to get out and have lots of fam in NY/NJ it’s great cuz you don’t want to spend ur life doing hard drives/flights.
Dh and I both have large families bh and there are many simchos .. nice to be an hr away from everyone

It’s all relative.

I grew up in Flatbush then lived somewhere in the Midwest for some years and now live in Passaic. Relative to “real” OOT, Passaic is not really OOT. Relative to Brooklyn/Lakewood/other in town communities, it’s totally OOT!

This. Why in the world was brooklyn made to be THE place and everything else is not as good? Its such a strange thing.
