I'm polling mothers who have daughters who are currently in grades 6-12:
What is/was her middle school/ junior high experience like?
Were classes generally under control or out of control?
Was the general atmosphere positive or negative?
What form of discipline or reward was used, if any, or if it was memorable? Do you think it was or wasn't effective?
Please answer poll and then, more importantly, I'd love to hear what it was like for your daughter.

Under control, very positive experience. But the school doesn’t tolerate babying them. They don’t let us save them like no bringing hw and lunch left at home, they can deal with the consequences. Eat a cream cheese sandwich and tell the teacher they don’t have it. So they don’t have current day issues of no responsibility and free for all attitude.

I worked in chassidish, yeshivish and sedated schools and the chutzpah 100% got worse across the board.
It’s extremely difficult to run a classroom and to motivate them to learn

Dd had a terrible combo of a class until fifth. They split them for 6th and the atmosphere is way better now bh. This year for 7th she’s taking her schoolwork more seriously than ever before (and frankly more than I ever did ).

The sedated schools must've been calm!

From the stories my daughters repeat going on in school it seems like the teachers hardly get to teach and the chutzpah is through the roof. I wonder if it's only my school or the whole generation. I would switch schools if I'd be accepted anywhere. It's very hard to get in anywhere once you already started out somewhere.

In my experience, chutzpah is more tolerated & not addressed seriously enough by the school staff. It's as if they don't expect better from the girls.
Times have really changed.

I'd love a more accurate poll. |
We definitely did that with some teachers. Talked, slept, popped popcorn, made grilled cheese… I have an entire DVD of these shenanigans. Hope I’m not outing myself.

I wonder if we were in the same school...
On 9th I used to leave the school premises and go buy ice cream, have a classmate open a designated emergency exit door for me to reenter 10 minutes after I left. Wore a hoody pulled over my face to hide from the cameras and then proceed to pass it out for whoever paid.... and the teacher was none the wiser. Seriously discipline was BAD or rather nonexistent.
In 10th grade a split off of that school opened. And I switched. Discipline was absolute! We were all so excited for the freshness, everyone wanted it to be a success.
Besides, the principal was someone really special. She respected everyone immensely becuase we were all yiddish neshamas. And it went back the other way too. We loved her. And noone wanted to be the first one to misbehave and disappoint her.
I LOVED school in hischool. The vibe was something else!
I have a daughter in 6th grade. Shes a real goody2shoes. (Like my husband was. Lol!) She has one classmate who's trouble.... we met at Freilach measuring for uniforms.
As soon as I saw her mother, it all made sense.... were related through my side of the family. The side that's adhd, all over the place, always laughing and onto the next hysterical thing.... and also the genius talented side. The side who are accomplished shadchanim, advanced mechamchim and known jokesters.
genes are STRONG! So what do we expect from her? Shell get in trouble, shell suffer thru school. And then she'll live love and laugh.
Having said all that, having substituted and with a lot of my family in chinnuch (some for a few years. Others many many years), I feel like there definitely is more chutzpah in the sense of guts.
But with the right technique and a genuine good heart and love for the kids, a lot of classrooms have near perfect discipline.

Chutzpah in all forms always existed.
Kids will try anything. It’s the attitude of respect- self respect and respect to others that has changed drastically.

I teach high school. Some days there are talking but for the most part it's quiet. I realized that when I come in well prepared and know exactly what I am going to do without pause then I have the class's full cooperation.

My kids had to be online tons during covid.
I am so not surprised if attention spans shortened for a few generations of kids and they became unbearable in the classroom
