He told me that his bank is Wells Fargo. He also gave me the case number, so that when I speak to my bank I can give them the case number. But my bank was not interested in the case number. They said it has nothing to do with them.
I hear what everyone is saying, but, other than hoping I will just pay him again, what was he hoping to gain? If his account is locked, it wouldn't even help if I paid him again because it's locked!
Meaning, once he saw that I wasn't jumping in to send him more money, why would he keep talking about the locked account? |
Because next step is saying send to another account or give me your bank info.. he’s working his way up. It’s literally a textbook scam.

Exactly.
Text them.
“I am so sorry your account was locked but I didn’t make any claim. I have called my bank twice to confirm and they did but unfortunately they can’t help unlock your account and it is your banks responsibility to do that: you probably need to speak to a supervisor at your bank. Good luck”

Please explain to me how this is a common scam. What is the scammer gaining here?

I don't think it's a scam. |
Exactly. At least someone agrees with me. 😃
She should definitely be careful with the next step and shouldn’t be naive. But right now it seems innocent.

He’s going to get you to send money or account info. Probably account info, give me all your details so I can tell my bank to unlock it. Or send you a code trying to break in..

I’m sure all the people who fall for scams agree with you. It’s why scammers are successful. Many people are naive and can’t see red flags if it hit them in their face.

Ok. He hasn't asked me for any info yet. He only said his account was locked and asked for help unlocking it. Amd I was the one who offered to meet at the bank, not him.
Have you seen this scam anywhere? I always try to Google scams if I think something is a scam but I haven't seen this one anywhere.

The only thing I can see him do is ask for more money. The rest is usually from professional scamming companies that call over the phone not neighborhood power washing companies.
Again op shouldn’t be naive and should know not send more money or give out info. But no need to call the police yet or threaten anyone. Can sympathize and say sorry I can’t help.

Question.
If I call Wells Fargo (from a number online) and give them the case number- is there any harm in that?
If I don't give any info?

I am not telling anyone to send anyone money..
Another thing that might have caused this lockdown is the person using the person account for business (not sure if this would case it.. but maybe)
Again not ops fault |
Maybe my theory about using a personal account for business transactions is right

I don’t think they are allowed to talk to you. If you don’t verify your account. Maybe you can call Wells Fargo and conference them on. This way you know forsure it’s wells fargo

But I’m not sure how that will help you besides for confirming it’s not a scam.. but still nothing really you can do. Just confirm over the phone you sent the money. Make sure not to give any personal info if you do

Took your idea of googling if it is scam… and did reverse.
Again.. don’t send more money or give any info or codes…

Agreed. I wouldn’t meet up. If you can and want over the phone with no personal info. Otherwise remember it’s not your fault. You can sympathize and that’s it… it’s really his issue to deal with his bank,

Thanks. I don't plan on giving any info (nor did he ask). But this proves that it could happen.
The only difference between my story and the one in this reddit is that my guy claims that the bank told him that I called my bank this past Friday to declare the fraud.
In the reddit story, the bank closed the account because they flagged it on their own.

Fwiw, I just looked up this pressure wash company on google.
It is a legit company, with only 5 star reviews.
(When I hired him, I didn’t bother checking because I just went with my friend's recommendation.)

Could be the bank told him that this transaction was marked as fraudulent/suspicous and he thinks you called in to claim it but it was flagged. Or it could be a totally different reason…
