Wondering if it's a good idea to send DS18 on an international flight that day?

Yes. It's a pleasure. Mostly empty plane. And usually cheaper than before or after.

Why would it not be a good idea? What are your concerns?

Yes many times it's usually the cheapest day to fly that week. Never had any issues

It's the best. Empty airports.

Just make sure they thank every staff person they meet who is likely working on their holiday.

I once flew Dec 25th to New York (from Europe), there was a snow storm in NY and after circling for an hour they diverted us to chicago (the nearest airport with customs that could accomodate us). They kept the Chicago airport open for us to land, but it was really eerie walking through a deserted airport, and then it was a long wait for transport to the hotel that the airline put us up in. (There werent really any taxis working then, we had to wait for the hotel shuttle which could only take a few people each time.) I had a connecting flight which I missed, but there was no staff in the airport to rebook me, so I went to the hotel not knowing how I would get to my final destination. BH it all got sorted by the airline, but it could have been very stressful for me. I'm quite chilled, and looked at it as an adventure, but I could have been panicking at being stuck in a hotel in a snowstorm in a strange city on my own as a teenager.

I'm sure one can light later on. Ask your Rabbi.

Depends how long a flight OP's son is taking. They definitely need to work out the details. December 25th is the first night of chanukah this year.

I am sure travelling during Chanukka counts as special circumstances.

Driving might be a little bit dicey after the feast when people are on their way home. Having had been drinking all day but depending on when the landing is and how close to the airport they are going should not be a big deal.

What about traveling on Thanksgiving? For domestic flight, is it better to fly the night before or on the day of?

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving is the absolute worst travel day in the year because more Americans will celebrate Thanksgiving than other holidays cuz Thanksgiving is a very American holiday that and 4th of July.

Travel on Thanksgiving itself for better empty your airport but Wednesday before will be packed.
