I would like to hear experiences of people who moved to in town as adults. How was the transition? What do you like about it? Not like? How long did it take to grow accustom to the change?

why do you ask?
I will put it this way. It takes me 15 minutes to drive from one end of my city to the other. And I dont live anywhere on the east coast.

I think a lot depends on personality. Why do you live where you live and why would you move?

I grew up way, way OOT, but in a big metropolitan city.
I moved to Queens after seminary and lived there for 10 years. I hated every minute of it and couldn't wait to leave. Even in my big city growing up, we had a big house and large yard. Grocery stores were huge and there was ample parking everywhere. And within the frum community, every single person knew each other and felt like family.
I didn't have any of that in New York. I also was always self conscious of my looks and not being able to keep up with the styles and trends. When my oldest was 4 we moved to a mid sized OOT community and then eventually moved to an even smaller OOT community. I finally feel comfortable where I am and where I'm raising my kids

I have lived in:
1. Big frum community but not NYC/ Lakewood. (Current)
2. Brooklyn.

1. I tolerate it. It's OK, some aspects I love and some I hate. I like that people know each other, its a community, and that there are still out of town aspects to the city. I like that there are choices but it is becoming more "NY and lakewood" type the bigger it gets. More pressure. More craziness. More competition for clothing, activities, peer pressure... Kids are coming back from NY and Lakewood and bringing back the matching clothes, upping the fashion demands, the "needs" and "the basics". The city has changed around me. I want to leave...

2. I hated hated NY. I waited until I could leave. Literally every time we came back home I looked for a reason to leave. When was the next vacation/YT etc. I hated the crowds. The pressure. The dirt. The noise. The competition. The lack of community. The fact that I lived somewhere for over a year and no one said hi to me. Or realized I moved in. Someone asked if I was new AFTER being there over a year- we had no kids but we were there a lot, was outside, took walks...it wasn't like I was a hermit. I hated the differentiation people made- you are this type or that type. Our kids go to different schools so how can they play together. I left and never want to move there again.

I grew up in a big city with a small Jewish community. I love Brooklyn! So much Jewish life! I love my city too, but definitely the amount of Jewish life that Brooklyn offers is amazing.
