My mother raised us to hang all our clothes to dry with the exception of socks, underwear or pajamas. She says that clothing get faded and shrink if you dry them. Hanging clothes to dry is time consuming and a bit annoying, it would be so much easier to just throw everything in the dryer but I don’t want to make my clothes look washed out or not fit me anymore.

Do you use the dryer for everything/most things, or do you hang things to dry them? I’m curious how the place you live in impacts this. I’m in NY.

If you use the dryer a lot, do you find that it shrinks or makes your clothes look washed out?

It's really 50/50. Clothing: boys shirts, skirts, girls tops, I don't dry. Men's shirts, towels, linen, underwear, pj's pants I dry.

I do like you. It definitely makes a difference, as I can attest by the times I mistakenly put something in the dryer.

People tend to do the opposite of their Mom did! Especially if 'their way was best', meaning they always talked about it.

I put most things in the dryer, with the exception of dresses, skirts and boy's suits. My kids came home from Seminary asking me to hang their stuff. I thought it was a passing stage, but as mother's they still hang most stuff.

My boys on the other hand, came home from Yeshiva asking me not to bother matching their socks. I didn't listen, but I did buy them plain socks from then on!

I also grew up that way but I grew up in a house with a laundry room and a stay at home mom. I work full time and live in an apt. my clothes will have to be hung in the dining room and might mold before they dry. and no one wants to live with clothes hanging all the time. so now most go in the dryer, on low so they won't shrink or fade too badly.

I hang things that will get ruined. I agree that we often do the opposite of our mothers -- my mother puts most things in the dryer except dressy clothes and bras. I hang a lot of shirts and skirts because the dryer ruined a lot of stuff when I was growing up. By ruin, I don't mean destroy, but shrink or change the shape enough so it's not flattering or doesn't fit well anymore.

When I hang clothes like girls dresses, skirts, etc they smell bad. Like straight out of the wash machine they smell bad, like a dirty diaper Sad is it just my machine? If I dry the clothes there isn’t a smell.

Also don’t you find when you hang clothes especially cotton, they look wrinkled after? Whereas if you dry them they don’t look wrinkled?

So that begs the question - do you iron your Children’s clothes?

Thanks all Smile

I only dry in the dryer underwear, socks (not tights/stockings), some pajamas, towels, linens.

I use the dryer for underwear, socks, some pjs, bedding and towels. Only towels and underwear go on high heat.
Everything else gets hung to dry, I live in a small apartment but somehow we manage.
During the winter when air drying takes longer I use the dryer a bit more. I also use it more after 9 days or yom tov when I have lots of laundry.
But I do find it damages the clothes.
My mother hardly uses her dryer, literally hangs bedding and towels.

I only use the dryer to partially dry boys and men's shirts so they don't need to be ironed. I hang everything else.
But I do get a lot of sunny weather.

You probably need to clean your washing machine. I buy cleaning packets and every so often run a cleaning wash.

Thanks! Can you link the cleaning packets? Mine is a top loader, I’ve run vinegar and didn’t seem to make a difference:(

I dry just about everything but I use the air-dry cycle for anything delicate or that I’m concerned about shrinkage. It works great, and needs less ironing!

Who needs clothing to last that long? It doesn't justify the convenience of using a dryer, especially since many of us work and have large families. Kids grow out of clothes, they go out of style. I'm not here to preserve them eternally and I need the convenience of a dryer. And I reuse clothing a lot. I put in vinegar in the load to preserve the colors and I do put the delicates in a mesh bag to be hung up to dry.

I have a good laundry room set up. I have two parallel bars for hanging clothing to dry, plus drying racks that fit underneath, so I have plenty of room to spread clothing out to dry properly. Most things are dry by the next day at the latest. I hang dry all dresses, skirts, tops, shells, bras, slips, bathing suits, and any Shabbos clothing that doesn't get dry cleaned except for boys and DH's Shabbos shirts. The things that go in the dryer are underwear, socks, pajamas, weekday pants, sweatshirts, DH and DS shirts, towels, and linen.

ETA: I definitely notice a difference in things that have gone in the dryer by accident (or by DH not noticing). Clothing has definitely shrunk significantly enough to be noticeable. I also don't dry anything that has a stain. I prefer to keep pretreating and washing until it comes out entirely, but sometimes it fades enough that it's not noticeable to most people so I put the clothing back into circulation. However I know the stain is there and I won't dry it in the hopes that it will eventually come out.
