It was Mordechai Hatzadik's father's name - Mordechai ben Yair ben Shimi ben Kish Ish Yemini, so it's totally from Tanach.
DH said we can do Meir instead but I think Yair is nicer.
Other names I love:
Betzalel - I love the meaning and the sound
Akiva
Yehuda
Daniel
Shmuel
Dov - nicknamed Dovi
Zev- nicknamed Zevi |
Yair is not yet extremely common in the charedi crowd but is definitely heard more than it used to be. I know of quite a few born in the last year or so...

What do you think will happen if you give your child an uncommon (but still beautiful) name?
That people will think you are not yeshivish? They’ll probably think that named for a relative. I know a very frum Elisha, Kehus, Noach… uncommon but who cares? I wouldn’t want my child to share names with half the class! (Ironically, I’ve named for relatives and my kids indeed share names with classmates.)

The names don’t appeal to me and it’s just not what I want to name my child. I’m also not a fan of forcing my kid to stick out. If they want to be unique that’s their choice and I back it, but I’m not forcing it on them. I got a huge list of names that I like and aren’t super common from this thread so I’m good.
