My sister is the reason scammers exist..... she always gets scammed I'm so confused as to why she keeps falling for it.

Story #1 ) she got a new laptop and she just set everything up. She received an email saying that her computer was hacked and it will shut off in a few minutes if she doesn't pay x amount of money for this security app... mind you that x amount of money was more expensive them her laptop. She comes to me to tell me how she is so happy that she caught it in time and she saw the email... I was ready to Shecht her. I was like girlllll are you serious she was almost in tears so I was able to gwt the money back for her bhhh

Story #2) this was a more professional scammer she was added to a Whatsapp group that dealt with investments they had a link to their website and it looked like a bunch of stocks she invested alottt of money. One shabbos she was saying how she has like 50k in investment I was like wow how'd you do that. So she told me there is this group..... I was like how about you try to pull the money out. This time around I was not able to get her money back.

Story # 3) after those 2 incidents she told me she'll talk to me before spending alot of money. It worked for a little. One day she comes to me and says. Finally I did it. I made a smart decision.... I was like great what'd you do. She said she signed up ( paid ) for a course that will teach her alternative medicine. I checked up the course one big scammmmm.... I ended up texting this lady to return the money or else....bh she got the money back

If anyone has any scam stories feel free to share lol

My husband also falls for these. Bh I don't think he ever lost any money to one of them, but he did have his laptop hacked which was a major pain.

I once heard a coworker on her phone saying "my social security number? It's ____. " Bh I stopped her before she finished saying the whole number. She was so confused about why I thought it was a scam and was I sure? It was the IRS calling, how can she hang up on them?

Got a phone call from my medical insurance asking if I had back pain as they would like to send me a free belt or something like that. Before I realized what was going on they tell me that really I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and that's what I should say when they pass me on to the next person to help me receive a FREE home test to see what other inherited deseases I might have. I realized that it was a scam and googled it.
Apparently, you get to speak to a doctor who sends you the FREE kit to do a mouth swab. You mail it back for FREE to the lab. BUT your real insurance doesn't cover this test and you are billed $1000 for this lab test. They probably send you many threatening letters until you pay up. It was a real doc and a real lab but they are all gettting pay back on this.

Good advice is that if someone calls you and they are anonymous, let them keep their anonymity and don't answer the call.

My FIL gives money to every sob story tzedakah email that he gets. He says, "it's so sad, there's no way it's not true"
DH showed him the public information of some of these organizations, how most of the money goes to overhead/salaries and very little goes to the poor people.
FIL doesn't believe it.
He says, "why would an executive raise money for a sick person and then take all the tzedakah money? Someone who works for a tzedakah organization has to be a tzaddik"

We cannot do anything about it.

I once had a man calling for a WIC recertification, and then proceeded to ask me weight, waist size, nursing, postpartum, pregnant, s-x, kegels etc.

If anyone wants to read a really interesting story, I was fascinated by this article from a woman who was scammed out of $50k and was by all accounts a savvy, educated person. It's very easy to say we'd never fall for that, and she feels very stupid in retrospect, but you can see how these people ramped up the psychological confusion until she felt like she had no choice.

My DH fell for this one.
He was offered an IT job where he could work from home and the company would supply the equipment. They told him they would send a check to him and he would, in turn, purchase the equipment. He recieved the check for $7k and deposited it. When he allowed access to his account to pay for the equipment, the company drained the entire account.

I can’t remember the details of mine because I blocked it out
But I got a call regarding my father who was in jail (how did they know? How did they get my number when I live in another country)
They asked me to confirm my ss it didn’t make any sense to me but I quickly googled the name of who they said they were and in my haste I didn’t pay attention that it was one digit off.
I basically gave my ss number to someone.
I was struggling with ppd and like I did my father had recently gone to jail.
I think I notified ss but I honestly don’t remember what happened

I had a man stalk me, but he disguised, by calling in to office I was working at, to warn me about my tznius dress code, how he can't step foot into our office, because I'm not dressed tsnius enough. I thought ok a meshuganer fanatic calling around, or maybe from a local school warning their grads, I used to hang up. Then my workmate , took it seriously and she said next time he calls, hand me the phone, because if he's giving us a psa, then maybe it's a message from Hashem, but in order to up my tznius, I would need to know, what he saw that wasn't tsnius enough.
I tried telling her, these are scammers, but she couldn't believe people just want to be bad.
She engaged in this convo with him, like what she needs to change, for her to be more tsnius, but he didnt want to say, said he wants to talk to me not her. Shevwent thru her wardrobw, to see what he meant, and ditched some clothes. Every time I would just knock down phone. Till one day, I was alone in office, and he called to yell at me, how can you be wearing an orange top. I freaked out, it's not random anymore, someone actually knows exactly what I'm wearing and stalking me. Shomrim caught this pervert. I wanted to track his call, and make a police report but then he stopped calling, and my boss said he'll make sure I'm never alone in the office, because he called when I was alone.

I don't know anyone who fell for any of them, but my neighbor (80+ years old) was very proud of herself for not falling for one. She got a phone call from someone who identified himself as Yaakov. She asked, "Yaakov who?" and the scammer said, "your oldest grandson". She was suspicious since it wasn't his voice. I don't remember what the scammer asked for, but she didn't fall for it and made sure to tell everyone that just because a caller identified himself as someone you know, don't believe it.
There used to be a fake microsoft scam claiming that your computer has a virus and asking for remote access. My sister almost fell for it, but luckily someone stopped her before granting access.

It wasn't WIC, it was a pervert, trying to get info like my chest size....if had s-x since my baby was born.....that s-x is good to engage in.....to try to get me to have s-x with him.

First the q appeared innocent like height weight, till I realized his motives.

I was arguing with him that I just re-certified, but he claimed my application got lost. When I said I never had such q, he said because you're new on program, and it's first time you are recertifying.

First he tried getting the info, you are on WIC, pregnant, nursing?

Not a money scam, but phoney call.

I had fbi department scam. They said someone was using my name and info to open bank accounts and smuggle and they were trying to help me. I totally believed until he asked me to go to the bank right then and take out money from my account and wire it to him. When I said he’s a scam he had me check up the name and badge number he gave me (which was from a real agent) then he threatened to have the “police department “ call me because I’m not cooperating. The police called and on cue with the same Indian accent and I just laughed and laughed and hung up.

I once bought something from a shady link. We told our credit card company who fought it for us.
But at the same time I never fall for the other types of scams... and I never buy from non reputable websites again. No passed along links or anything.
