Sorry. Peeing on the floor on purpose at that age is not normal.

Why in the world??
We can't control or predict everything our kids do.
We do our best at parenting, but the outcome is not a reflection of you.

Are they typically developing?

It's definitely not typical and if it was just 1 of them doing it I would be concerned. But they do feed off each other, and they find it hysterical, so they just keep egging each other on. My boys have done things way below their age level when this happens.

My two boys, same ages, were doing the same. I was absolutely disgusted, but apparently it’s normal. I had them help clean it and that seemed to help / discourage them from continuing…

Yes. The younger one has adhd who I suspect was the instigator.

We once had an issue in our bungalow colony with boys this age peeing in front of eachother on the floor. They thought it was a joke. They didn't even mean to be bad

Ew!! I'm so sorry!
Rip up the carpet and lay down a tile that's easy to mop up if they decide to continue.
Maybe you want to get them a potty and make it their job to clean it every night?

This has nothing to do with you. Kids are interesting creatures. We were like them too at some point doing other weird things. It’s a teachable moment but don’t be disgusted or blame yourself.

It’s totally disgusting.
I have 2 boys close in age and they have done the grossest things. People say that boys close in age do that.
You are not a failure of a parent.
Make sure your boys know that it’s disgusting and the germs are unhealthy and can make people sick. They should know that you’re removing the carpet because of what they did and that you are not proud of what they did and they shouldn’t do it again.
P.S. they might do something similar again

Watch Nate Bargatze on the difference between babysitting girls and boys. He’s a clean comedian.

Your post reminded me how my son, when little, once discovered that he could go in our back yard and gleefully used that on a regular basis instead of the bathroom until I discovered it and put a stop to it...
The one thing I would do in your place is make sure that the boys work to try to remove the stain/smell, even though it will be ineffective, in an age appropriate way, before you change the carpet. The 9 year old should be at it longer. This is because at this point it will have become a habit for them, so explaining is of course the first step, but action/ consequences would help instill the reminder not to continue doing it again, even if they are tired or really have to go.
I'd also put some furniture or something heavy on the area they used to go on, temporarily at least, to give them another pause if they go there out of habit... Habits can be hard to break.

Mother of many boys here-
This is so normal.
One of the many joys of raising boys.
I’m sure they’ll treat you to many such examples of their creativity as they grow 😃
