I was never on a diet (and bli ayin hara won't need one for a while), however my dh has put on some "marriage weight" if you know what I mean. We've tried cutting out any bread during the week (only crackers, rice cakes etc) and eating a lot of veggies. However, my dh is getting frustrated at feeling hungry all the time. Any ideas from you wise women out there?...He is not fat, but could stand to lose 20-30 pounds (he is tall and broad so it's not a lot compared to his normal weight). Also, both his father and older brother are very big and I am nervous that it is also genes and therefore must be monitored even more. He learns all day so excersize not really an option (he walks for 5 minutes from the house to the kollel ).

Amother, sounds like my husband! Were married 10 months and my husband already put on 35 lbs!! The only problem is he doesnt mind! I keep telling him to go on a diet but he doesnt want to! Now hes in competition with me cuz im pregnant! How do I get him to realize he needs to lose weight??

Don't cut out bread and carbs, he'll just fill hungry all the time. The South Beach is a great diet only if you can make it past the first two weeks , where you can't have any carbs including fruits. He should continue eating plenty of fruits and veggies and instead of regular bread he should eat only 100% whole grain breads and crackers. The fiber in these will fill him up so he won't feel hungry so fast. Rice cakes are no good, because they're like white bread, they digest really fast, and the end result is that you feel even hungrier an hour later. Brown rice cakes should be OK in moderation.

u say he learns all day. does that mean till 6 or till 12? if its till 6 , he can go for a run? how about exercising at home...

The South Beach Diet... it's hard the first 2 weeks but then you can eat "healthy" carbs like whole grains, fruit, brown rice etc. It really works.

healthy dieting is good, but chances are, with exercise itll happen faster and wont only be temporary...
If theres a will theres a way- lots of ppl dont "have time to exercise" but have time for lots of unimportant things.

Try replacing your white flour with whole wheat products, cut out all sweet drinks and have at least 8 cups of water a day.(seltzer and tea count) have at least 3 veg. a day (not counting starchy ones like potatoes and corn.) If he is hungry without the carbs. try eating a baked potato for lunch instead of bread, they are both starch but potato burns faster and is healthy. EXERCISE IS A MUST!! it is soooooooooooooo important. You don't need much even a half hour a day is enough to make a diff. He should try doing it in the morn. it gives you lots of energy.

THere are ways that you can help without being annoying. If you do not tell him that it is a diet it will be so much easier for him. With my Dh I cook a Yummy ( emphasis on the tasting good )healthy dinner for him every night. Plus I do the shopping so I do not buy anything unhealthy. I have cut up veggies in the fridge and always offer to peel or cut him a peice of fruit. I always ask him to walk with me instead of taking the bus. Of course he still wants some cake and candy on occasion and I just do not make a big deal about it because it would only make him resentful. You will see with time he will appreciate it ( even if he does not vocalize it ) because he will feel so much better and have more energy.

Willow, I think you are right - not telling him it's a diet is better. Do you have any menu ideas of healthy yummy AND filling breakfasts/lunch/dinners? I am in charge of shopping, but because I never had to watch what I eat I have no idea what to buy. He WANTS to eat more healthy (this came to him with a little help from me ) but he needs me to be in charge. Any specific recipes/tips? Also, it's hard with shabbos because especially now with short shabbosim we end up eating SO MUCH.

Well I usually don't make him breakfast but some nice, filling, easy and nutrious ideas you can make:
-cut up fruit in plain yogurt ( in the beginning My dh put in honey, now however he got used to the idea that Hey fruit is sweet all by itself )
-whole wheat toast with eggs ( you can even sub. some of the yolks with extra egg whites he won't know unless you tell him . Use pam instead of butter.
-oatmeal with raisens, milk, or fruit. (Once I even made it with spinage, He did not like that so much )
You can make the plate look pretty by slicing up some veggies ( this way he gets some extra veggies in)
For dinner you can make: always accompanied by a huge salad I even pick at the veggies and he'll join me, its sort of like muching on chips I guess so he doesn't even realize how much nutrients he is getting! (never when we have guests tho )
-salmon with roasted veggies
-veggie soup with crusty whole wheat bread (but then I would throw in some sort of protein with the soup)
-Chicken breast with spices and roasted root veggies
-stir fry with tofu ( a very very very hard food item to introduce to your Dh so I would not use that right away)
-beans with brown rice and steamed broccli
-roasted chicken with green beans and garlic
-Baked potato with lowfat cottage cheese and spices with baked fish
-turkey spinage salad with Whole wheat pasta and fresh tomato sauce
The idea is when you fill his plate make it look pretty and full using different colored veggies.
For shabbos you do not have to eat that much either. You can make by the fish course a lot of different salads. And just don't slather your main dish with a ton of oil. for dessert you can cut up fresh fruit,,or if your Dh really needs his fix of something (mine does) There are a lot of yummy recipes for healthy cakes and muffins. Of course sometimes you just need have the real thing and then thats fine too.

I lost alot of weight by eating HEALTHY. If you make him three healthy FILLING meals each day with snacks like fruits and veggies in between he wont feel hungry and therefore prob wont snack on the wrong foods which is what we all do when we are hungry! (many of us if not all...)
I agree have whole wheat instead of white flour. I actually like brown rice better then white and I know some really good healthy supper recipes and any meal recipes if you'd like some...

some people think if you eat less or cut out certain foods you'll loose weight but although maybe thats true 1) its unhealthy and 2) you gain it back very easily! If you eat healthy normal meals... its a way you can eat you whole life and not worry about diets.... there is nothing wrong with any type of food as long as its used in mederation!!! Like limit whole wheat bread to once a day... have one portion of carb one of carbohydrate and one of fat by every meal. the three together really fill you up! also drink lots of water.
another idea is you can ask him to go on walks with you at least three times a week to keep you company... that way you are both working out!

1. Cut out oil in your cooking. Bake or grill instead of frying, most things come out almost as good (and it's a great timesaver )
2. Use vegetables to make a meal more filling, I.e. serve a vegetable soup (make sure to only use vegetables, not potatoes, beans or corn, if you want it to be a 'free' soup) Put vegetables in the protein (I add spinach to minced chicken/turkey/meat - it's yum) or carb (mushrooms, peppers in rice etc). Besides saving calories they add flavour and nutrients to your dishes. Also have a vegetable side dish.
3. Salads. A good and interesting salad can convert even the most ardent salad-noneater. However, beware because some of the dressings are very high in fat. I usually substitute the oil (in meaty salads with chicken soup, in parev salads with a fruit juice or combination fruit juice and water).
4. Use low-calorie, low-fat varieties wherever possible. Low fat cheese, yoghurts, bread, drinks etc.
5. You can substitute oil in cooking with chicken soup and in baking with apple sauce.
That's all I can think of for now, if I think of something more I'll add it b'n.

For people that cannot stop eating, eat big amount of foodin little time and that like sugar and carbs a lot!
I have been trying lots of diets since I am little! to always gain it back plus some more ! till I found Food Addict Anonymous and greysheet, they both are 12 step programm, and free! it's a lifetime programm todo! thank god I am there almost 3 yeard chck tose names on google!

Well guess what? one day my husband just decided on his own without me saying anything that he must go on a diet! Hes on it since wednesday and doing pretty good. Im not saying he lost anything yet but hes determined and thats the main thing. Hes basicly just watching what he eats. hes not on a specific diet. Was funny cuz the day after he started he put on his pants and was like I didnt lose any weight yet and im like chill out u cant see it after one day!!!
