Has anyone toilet trained at around this age? If so how did you do it?
My dd is 17 months and is VERY aware of bodily functions, often she'll say kaki as she is making or just after and if I ask her if she made a kaki or is making she'll say yes or no appropriately, if I ask her if she wants to try to make in the toilet she'll say ok and run to the bathroom door, if her older sister (who was never aware like this and wasn't toilet trained until she was almost 3) says she needs to make she says to her go, go, go and runs with her to the bathroom, if she sees her sister sitting on the toilet she asks her peepee? kaki?
I think you get the picture. So how do train her, at the moment I'm putting her on the toilet once in a while letting her sit until she wants to come off, if she makes she gets lots of praise and a sticker, but as I said it's only once in a while. When dd1 goes back to gan in a couple of weeks I want to start to be more intensive with her on this, so what do I do? Should I take the diaper off altogether and leave the potty out? Should I just put her on the toilet at set times? Or should I do both? What do you suggest?

Leave the potty out, forget the diapers, put her on every once in a while. Keep reminding her every 15 minutes or so that she has UNDERWEAR now and we can't make that wet.

I have a 17 month old & totally cannot train her now. we are up to: I don't like dirty diapers, so I'm going to take mine off and play in it stage. but I never use a potty, only a toilet seat. it's called "cushy tushy" and costs about $10. I have one for each bathroom & they come with their own hanging hooks.

for sure ... she can do it ... leave her the potty and bring her at set intervals ... before and after she eats - before and after she sleeps ... it's so much easier in the summer as well ...

My older son trained about about 2.5 with lots of missteps (he was fully self-trained earlier but regressed when his little brother was born) but my younger son (now 20 months) trained at about 18 months. He demonstrated a lot of the signs you mention, and was very, very interested in going after or before his brother. Then he refused to put on diapers, so we went for it. As long as you keep reminding her, and let her be somewhat in charge (like have her own special potty, etc), she'll probably be fine.
At this age, you might still have to be a bigger part of the process, since underwear can be hard to get up and down. I still have to help my son with this part (unless I just put shorts on him ). But they can be ready at this age, especially with an older child's example to follow.
We have a sticker chart, and my littlest boy likes to put up stickers about half the time. The other half, he's too busy. But he does tell me he's a "beeg, beeg boy!" when he goes!
My son still occasionally has accidents. He spontaneously goes to the toilet most of the time, but if he gets busy and I'm not thinking about it, I usually get a "Mommy, potty, potty!!" and then it's too late. But it's a good start!

There are a few toilet trained 17 month old on my March 2007 group at CafeMom. You might want to ask there.
I'm considering testing the waters by getting a toilet seat for ds, but I sense that it is too early for him.

my kids prefer the toilet seat to a potty. a potty is gross to clean and I dont want to be stuck emptying one for a year. on the toilet the feel BIG!

My twins are 19 months and I don't even want to THINK about it for another year. My boy has only a few words and my girl has about 8 words but none of them relate to bodily functions-- so they can't even tell me if they went. And they can't walk yet (they've each got different special needs). The thought of even thinking about starting to train them now makes my head spin. It amazes me the different abilities of different toddlers this age and what a wide range there is. Some toddlers are young adults and some are still babies.

some young adults are still babies ... I wouldn't worry - babies all grow at their own pace ...
