my daughter started daycamp and she refuses to go to the bathroom there. She does the toilet dance all day until she comes home. she does not have accidents. The counselors encourage her to go, but to no avail. She cries and is hysterical. She also has a long ride on the schoolbus. As soon as she comes home she makes a beeline for the bathroom. Any ideas?

As long as she's not having any accidents or uti's, you shouldn't worry.

Give it a few days. If she's that miserable, she'll probably go. Do you think there's any reason why she does this?

I have this with 2 of my kids- they come off the bus from school adn run to the bathroom. one hates going to public bathrooms, he thinks they are dirty and can't use them at all , even in school. the other one, my 6 yr old was having accidents on the bus after school, or wouldn't be able to make it to the bathroom when she came home from school. Apparently she was afraid of the bathroom in school- she once got locked in and couldn;t get out, she had to climb over or under the door after being lockied in for a few minutes - I told her to take a friend with her to the bathroom to show her how to lock and unlock it or to have a friend hold the door for her when she had to go. since then she hasn;t had any problems.

You can try a few things. One- Let the Morah make EVERY CHILD go to the bathroom at a certain part of the day. You have to sit on the toilet and at least try- no excuses.
two- The Morahs can create a buddy system for the whole class. When one kid has to go to the bathroom, they have a buddy who guards the door so nobody can come in. It gives the child security, that nobody will come in and they won't get stuck in the bathromo because they know someone is "on call".
Good Luck!

Another side point. Could there be anything in the bathroom that she may be afraid of? Fire Alarm maybe? Does the toilet flush really loud? Could she reach the seat easily? Ask her, it may be something to look into. My daughter would hold it in every single day in school and she would never tell Morah why, as much as they asked her. Until I asked her and she told me she's scared of the blinking light in the bathroom (fire alarm). I told the morah and they worked with her so much until she got comfortable to go. they reassured her that the only there is a fire drill is when the office calls and when the weather is nice, and the office didn't call and it's cold out so you can go. Every day my daughter would ask me what the weather was outside. As long as I told her cold she went off to school happily.
