They are wild animals and should not be kept as pets. Most will be unhappy in captivity. They are extremely sensitive and will even stop eating for months at a time.

The salamanders hibernate in burrows or crevices underground during winter. Spotted salamanders feed on worms, slugs, snails, spiders, millipedes, crickets, beetles, ants, and other invertebrates. In turn, they are food for some snakes, birds, fish, and mammals.

I just found this
Salamanders make great pets. They're ideal for apartment residents because they're quiet. They don't take up a lot of room because they're small. They don't need a background to run around like a dog.
