He talks like he's ready. He's 2.5 years old and he is very toilet-aware because we are still training his 4 year old sister. So, today, in the afternoon I suggested that he go without a diaper because he loves to make in the toilet and get a candy.
Well, he made 4 different puddles and used up all my dry shorts for him.
After the 4th time I just put the diaper back because it seemed so pointless.....
I'm not sure when to try again.

Well ds is 2 and we thought he was starting to get ready - talking about it and all. But sometimes their bodies are just not mature enough. wait a couple more months and try again.

Aren't you glad that we (or most of us) don't have wood floors and/or wall-to-wall carpeting?

I think I commented about that in another thread, I hope you didn't take it bad. I just believe that when a child is ready to be trained, he won't be having 4 accidents in a row. That to me indicates that he still is not ready to be left in underwear. Maybe try Pull Ups. I never used those but it works for some children. Good luck!
P.S. 2 1/2 is still young to be completely trained for a boy. Many boys that age are just getting introduced to the toilet.

The only reason I thought he was ready was that he's so into making on the toilet! He loves making and getting the candies. So, I thought I'd try it for an afternoon. And he let me leave off his diaper too. He even insisted on it! Look, he turns 3 on rosh chodesh Kislev. I will be sending him to the cheder's gan probably from the beginning of the year. So, I thought it would be a good idea to try to train him now.... I guess it's too soon. Sheesh. 4 puddles in maybe one hour!

It's only day 1!!! it can take weeks to master this, did you really think he'd be perfectly trained on day one?
buy several packs of training pants and prepare to wash them daily. put him on the potty every half hour or so, make a big deal every 15 minutes when his pants are dry, and give him treats.
this isnt your first time toilet training, is it?

I'm toilet training my ds now, he's a month younger than yours.
I have him without underwear or shorts for the begining - its been 4 days- as soon as I put u-wear on him he made in them and when I put shorts on (without u-wear) so he could play outside, he was wet right away.
when he is not clothed, he hasn't had one accident yet!!! so maybe try without shorts and see what happens. from my experience, it takes 2 to 3 weeks for a child to be toilet trained fully, so don't give up after an hour
good luck

People give candy for making in the potty or toilet? I've gone to the bathroom trillions of times in my lifetime, and nobody has given me one piece of candy for it. No fair.

My 2 year old was recently toilet trained, and he gets a chocolate each time he goes #2. Now every time he sees me coming out of the bathroom he says "Mommy gets chocolate?"

lol, Mama Bear! I once went to s/o's house for Shabbos and they were toilet training their kid who had the same name as me. So all Shabbos I kept hearing, "Yay! Ima'la made!" And automatically until I reminded myself that they didn't mean me.
ChossidMom, did you kidnap my ds? Alternatively, would you like to train him while your at it? 2 for the price of 1?

Well we did it differently. In spite of the rising price of disposable diapers in this country when my kids were little we decided not to train until they had dry diapers almost all of the time and would ask for the toilet. Then we would remind them to go every half hour during the day and it took about 2 days to train. At night it was usually almost a year later (3 versus 2 for daytime) and never made a big deal about it...and at night it was only wet almost always...never dirty...

He did it! He's dry! And clean!!
The little guy is totally toilet trained. One day he just said "Rotzeh Tachtonim" (want underpants) and that was it! Maybe a couple of accidents but he's totally clean for the last week . YAYYYYYYYY!

That's great! My son is also mostly toilet trained, and in less than 4 days. He's been doing only one accident a day, so I'm hoping that means that he's basically trained. I'd like to send him back to playgroup today for 2 hours while I go to the gym, and see how he is out of the home.
