I've been told not to do trips today and let my kids go swimming because today is a day of tragedies in Klal yisroel's History.
Can anyone explain what happened and what is the mkor?

In the Kinnos you can read about it - "Shaali Srufa BaEish". It's Kinna 41 in the Artscroll Kinos - about the burning of the Talmud in France which was Erev Shabbos Parshas Chukas. I think some people fast on this day. It's a very real day of tragedy. Artscroll gives very detailed historical background to the Kinna. Definitely worth reading.
