is it the kind of freezer that needs to be defrosted periodically? if not, I suggest you ask a repair guy why it's doing that

I find that my freezer becomes icy due to the humidity. I am careful to only open it for a minute and shut it tight again.

How would I know if it needs to be defrosted periodically. We moved into our apartment (the fridge is rented) and I noticed that within a day or two after putting food into the freezer the food was coated with thick ice. I'm a bit wary of telling our landlord about it unless I KNOW it is a problem with the freezer.

In the freezer there is usually a sticker saying what type of freezer it is. The way you describe it, I think you have a manual defrost. But I don't know how often it needs to be done.
