How can you get to the number 21 using 1, 5, 6 and 7? You may use each digit only once and standard arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) as many as you want. You may also use parentheses. Any other symbols are not allowed I.e. decimals.
You CANNOT combine two numbers. For example, 15 + 6 = 21...you can't combine 1 and 5 to make 15.

Hidden:

.5x1x6x7 = 21

The definite should come from the fact that you know that everyone knows that there are at least 38

Letting tamari answer this because the puzzle that was so neat in my brain is slowly moving out of place.

Like couldn’t those mathematicians all deduce that there is a chance of people being aware that there are 38,39,or 40 people with blue eyes. So 38 is a clear fact to all. And once people don’t leave on day 39 it means it means that 39 is a fact to all and thus you are probably the 40th.

Why does it have to start from 1?

Isn’t it the same as my original question. Why did the plane have to come 39 times for naught?

Apparently, their level of brilliance way exceeds any of ours.....because, NO, your theory will not work. The bolded will not happen were it not "officially" made aware that at least one is blue-eyed. The whole solution is built upon that fact. In a case of 2 ppl, the "not leaving" of person 1 on day 1, does not tell person 2 anything if 1 is not notified that at least 1 is blue-eyed, therefore 3 people can't deduce anything on day 2, 4 people can't deduce anything on day 3......40 ppl can't deduce anything on day 39.
If you still don't understand, I AM TRULY SORRY. I'm starting to regret posting this riddle to begin with.....but I found it so intriguing, that I had to.

What would be the first equation? You do understand that I used up way too much brain power today which even an entire batch of cookies can’t restore!

Regarding the blue eyed riddle I just read many different riddle sites and there are many people refuting the logic and counter refuting etc of this particular riddle with no definite conclusion....so it seems like this riddle in general is very divisive....

6 ÷ (1 - 5/7) = 21

Don't know how to type fractions....
1 - 5/7 gives you 2/7. 6 divided by 2/7 = 21!

Yes my calculator agrees that this is correct but I’m glad I asked for the answer. I didn’t think in this direction at all.

But everyone always comes to the conclusion that it does work.

Still got very few cookies left. I can use one more riddle today. But not one where the logic can be refuted Laugh

I’m just glad I didn’t nod along to your answer until I was really really sure I agree. Makes me feel better that many others didn’t take the answer sitting down.
