I'm so old that probably very few of you were there in my times.
I started camp in 7th grade, I was in מאה אחוזים and my class was עשר
In 8th grade I was in chudosh, in פרדס מבחר, my class was אתרוגים.
In 9th grade I was in the very ill-fated אבני מלואים in ברקת....
we had the salmonella outbreak....
"ברקת ברקת צוקוועטשטע פאטעיטאס"...
"אין הארלעם פראוועט מען האלאווין"....
10th grade I was a fourth grade counselor. My almost favorite year. I loved my girls. I made a ton of money in tips!
11th grade, I was a 7th grade teacher.... we were in יד אחת, and my class was זרת. my favorite year!!
If you were in camp any of these years and you remember anything of what I wrote, pipe up!
Btw I take credit for this thread, bc all of my comments on the Yiddish lyrics thread inspired all this |
Yup! I'm a grade below you!

The one thing I can relate are the songs and ‘cheers’. Seems those were passed along to the younger generation

I was there during the food poisoning. I got it too.
The ENTIRE camp emptied out for Tisha B'av. The only girl who stayed in camp was Shevy Ekstien... my classmate... her parents were in Argentina (her father was the rav in Buenos Aires then) and she had nowhere to go. Poor girl. (Her mother and her husband passed away in the past year btw, super sad. She's only in her 40's. Freaky thing to have a classmate an almanah.)

You know what's really funny? that the scary ruchnius ladies from those camps are not scary at all. Once I became an adult I started talking to them normally, mother to mother. "ח.ג. ראזענבערגער" is actually a delightful person, as are Mrs. Laylee Posen & Mrs. Herzog and whichever other ruchnius ladies were on premises. Even Rebbetzin Hinda Halberstam who is a formidable force -- when I meet her at a doctor's waiting room etc I talk to her as if we are contemporaries. We were scared stiff of those ladies for no reason. Now as an adult I feel so weird when kids like my neighbors are 'scared' of me -- I still feel youthful and want to be their friend but they look at us at a real distance.

Some other memories many of you probably dont even remember:
mr. Kohn's EPIC kiddush and the way we all mimic'ed him... the super loud enthusiastic YOOOOIIIIM HASHISHEEE....
and I dont think ANY OF YOU were in camp the summer that Rivka Tzirel Ashkenazi fooled EVERYONE in the entire camp, including Mr. Herzog & Mr. Kohn, with a fake letter she sent that there's a new pirtzah in camp, an English book called THE MAN that is circulating among the girls and is a terrible book....

Mrs Weiss once punished a kid for screaming when she saw a spider, forced the kid to go sleep in the younger kids bunk. Literally, late at night got the kid to put on a robe, remove the linen from the bed and shlep with the linen and blanket to another bunk to sleep. All because the kid was scared of a spider.
And Mr. Rosenberg locked a kid in a makeshift cage amongst all the other ridiculous things he did. And the yelling
I think both of these kids are OTD today. One tried to commit suicide and last I heard is in a coma |
this is AWFUL. wow.

ahh yes. Only in 10th grade could I finally relax, bc I was in a counselors room and knew my locker would not be searched.

And camp time!
But, the simplicity, the girls being creative and coming up with their own fun. Not all the craziness camp has become. Mbr changed things a lot in the world of satmar Camps. The competition was great to stop with the rigidity and have more of a program. But l’masa kids now are spoiled... |
Oh yes. MBR changed up how satmar runs camps. It's run completely differently these days.
When pupa or viznitz came to visit satmar they were amazed at how neat and clean and bootcamp-like our camp was run. They had never heard of such a strict setup.
Hantiga maidlech you can't make them be this way.... it's a different era...
it was even worse when my mother grew up. she started going to camp in pre 1-A. All they ever did was play board games or sports. no major activities .
By the time I was in 9th grade there were ONLY major activities.

Oh, but don't take offense, you guys seem to have a memory like eisen. I have a crazy short and vague memory.
Also, in the olden days, it was THE GIRLS who made camp a hit. With their imagination and creativity. |
I still have all the photo albums I made of my camp days. Sadly, no one is gonna care about them ever as I don't have daughters. I doubt that in 20 years my potential granddaughters will care about their ancient bubby's camp albums from the 90's.

She stayed in a tiny bungalow near bunk 6. That summer I officially sold 'der yid' to the families and to the girls who wanted them. My father would put a whole bunch on the camp bus & I'd sell them. Mrs. zupnik made sure I put one away for her every week.

I think a lot of gaffes are attributed to Mr. Kohn even if theyre not his. Sort of how all the jokes happened to Yankel Miller. Supposedly, this joke was told over at an ATIME event (Chaya Breindel Katina told it to Brany Rosen who was just a few days after a devastating stillbirth) that Mr. Kohn at an event with politiciant announced that everyone should give the politician a standing ovulation. I dont know if he really did that, but I think you could wipe the floor when Chaya Breindel told over the joke, bc we all just about wet ourselves.
