Were you given any set of standards for the year? Like creating plot. Using dialogue in a story. Different genres. Poetry. Using figurative language. Anything?

It's more than just writing prompts. There are skills. What skills are the kids expected to cultivate this year?

Google "I can statements" for writing in the 8th grade. And then break down the skills and lessons from there.

Naming the World, Bret Anthony Johnston (for writing fiction)
Poemcrazy, Susan Wooldridge (poetry prompts)
Lessons that Change Writers, Nancie Atwell (lesson plans for all writing genres)

I taught middle school english. There is a lot you can google.
Some lesson examples:
1) Using vivid verbs and descriptive adjectives - replace boring ones and have them describe a monster or creature and show how to replace boring adjectives

2) Show rather than tell - how to use actions in character. "She slammed the door and stomped to her room," rather than just saying she was angry. Give them some scenarios and have them write their own

3) Dialogue - This is a big one. It is hard to incorporate but have students role play talking to each other and then putting it into words

I can go on and on. I love writing. There is no end to which tools to use and every couple weeks, focus on a new skill.
