Our couches are in desperate need of cleaning they are made of material and they are so dusty I can't handle them how can I clean them I wack them smack them but they just don't get clean. The same goes with the carpets they are starting to have a funny dusty smell to them.

couch - vacuum them, wipe them down with a damp cloth (I also use a bit of liquid soap or something to make bubbles/smell nice) or get a cleaning solution for fabrics.
carpets- shake n' vac or one of the more modern versions (but can cause allergies), vac them really well or get hold of a carpet cleaning machine (gives them a shampoo/rinse!) which really freshens them up.

wish I had a cleaning machine for my carpets. but if I vacuum my couch not always does all the dust come out. I just have to smack it a little and it becomes a little bit black on the surface from all that dust.

Why don't you call in a carpet cleaner, they usually do couches also. Although I dont know were you are located if it is available ...........

were I am located these things don't come easy they come maybe once a year before pesach when a lot of people need them so this way they are not wasting their time on one or two people.

Actually we have the seats attached so no strays end up like before under or in it etc. And to Pesach clean it's such a breeze.
Plus my kids don't take off cushions anymore to make a haunted house  and when we wanted to sit we did not know where they were so by attaching cushions to the couch we all win
