What is the point of a farbrengen? I know its a spiritual thing, it makes people happy. So why do the men have a farbrengen at the most serious times? ex. The day the Rebbe had a stroke.

The point of a Farbrengen is not to make you happy, it's to elevate you to a higher spiritual level.

From a non-Lubavitch litvak, could you please explain what a farbrengen is? Is it like a chasidishe "tish"? Are they scheduled or impromptu or both? Who goes? Is it by day or night? Is it food? Music? Thanks.

I dont know that much of a farbrengen, its for both men and women (they do it separatly). They sing negunim, there is food and drinks. People make lechaims. The ones that I went to were only at night. But you can probably do it anytime.

It´s hard to define farbrenben in just a few words but I´ll add my thoughts. A farbrengen is a chance to get together, men with men and women with women, to share inspiration through stories, niggunim, divrei torah etc. Farbrengens could be planned, for a special occasion, a birthday, or impromptu, and the purpose is to increase feelings of ahavas yisroel(this forum is sometimes like a farbrengen) and be mechazek(strengthen) the participants in their avodas hashem.
There´s a saying "what a chassidishe farbrengen can accomplish, even malach michoel can not accomplish." Malach Michoel is the angel of kindness who awakens kindness from Hashem on Yidden. Yet, when Jews get together and make lechaim and bless each other they can accomplish even more because when Hashem sees His children together in achdus He showers His blessings and kindness on them.
L´chaim!!
Tonight is Chassidic yom tov yud beis tamuz, the chag hageula of the Frierdike Rebbe(6th Lubavitcher Rebbe).
Moshiach Now!!

Why anonymous?
I had a feeling it might be taken as you took it, jewish mama, rather than as the genuine question it is. Sorry for the offense.
