Many years ago, 1976 to be exact, on Chanuka, there was a car accident in which everybody was killed, 5 shochtim and a mashgiach (not sure how many people in all).

The miracle is as follows:

The mashgiach who was killed was not the regular mashgiach but someone who came from Israel. The regular mashgiach is a Gerrer chasid who always went to Eretz Yisrael for Rosh Hashana. That year, the Gerrer Rebbe, the Beis Yisrael, told him not to come for Rosh Hashana but to come for Chanuka instead ...

Miraculous for one, not so miraculous for the other. I don't know what I feel about this story.

And not everybody was killed. One of them survived for quite a few years, but died not too long ago.

ok I have to admit this story bothers me. Motek where did you hear it from? someone reliable?
I can't imagine the Gerer Rebbe would have one person killed in another person's place, something sounds wrong with the story.

Well, I am sure the Gerer Rebbe didnt want to have someone killed instead of someone else, he might just have seen that for this specific person it was better to not come for R"H and come Chanuka instead. There are many many stories with the Rebbe about this, such as when he told I belive it was Bibi Netanyahu not to fly that night back to israel and the airplane was highjacked, and I am not sure who it was but I think it is bibi went back to the Rebbe and asked him, that if he knew the plane would have been high jacked why didnt he say something and the Rebbe responded that he didnt know that the plane would be high jacked but rather saw that for this specific neshama it would not be good to fly that night.....
Freilichen Chanuka to all

Sorry, but this story does nothing for me. Had all avoided tragedy, it would have been noteworthy. The way it stands, it's disturbing.

Very sad for you to even bring it up this way, motek. My sil is one child of one of the shochtim, who was nebech left an orphan at the ripe young age of 11 months r'l. Crying Her whole family was left without a father from one minute to the next, and you are saying what, exactly??????

It sounds comparable to all those stories we know about the guy who missed the train and later found out it crashed.
"Miracle amidst tragedy" says it well.

I don't think its comparable GR because in stories like that, one or two people missed out on a tradgedy b"h

but in this story, somebody takes the place of the one that was saved.
That's why I'm thinking that maybe the details are a bit fuzzy.

I still think it's the same. I feel terrible for the families, but Hashem has His plans. We don't know why things happen.

it's always a tragedy when someone dies ...

and I guess always a miracle when someone survives what could have otherwise been his fate too ...

my husband heard it from someone whose brother-in-law's father is the Gerrer Chassid

The Gerrer Rebbe didn't kill anyone estis ...

One of the people who died was Spiegel, another was a Lubavitcher named Shmuel Hecht.

Do you want to ask the Gerrer Chassid what he was saying when he related this?

chas v'sholom v'chalila v'shoelaces...I never meant to imply that.

I merely think maybe some details are missing from the story or the way its told comes out sounding off. after all your husband did hear it like 3rd hand.

I just don't find the story to be inspirational. Oh so one guy didn't die, B"H but 6 other people did. Okay Baruch Dayan Emes.

Sorry, can't be inspired by this story.

Unless you want to give us another story which tells us there's just no way to fathom Hashem and why he does things but I don't know if we really need these stories as I think each of us has enough of those stories in our own personal experiences.

I'm not sure the group of shochtim motek is talking about is the same group BH is talking about. I know the group BH is talking about, but there was a second group,in Eretz Yiosroel, 2 of the shochtim were my great uncle and 2nd cousin. Everyonein the car was killed.

There are many more inspirational stories one can share.

But then again, I think Motek is again challenging us and encouraging us to look at things a bit differently.

Having thought it through, I still don't think this kind of story is really my cup of tea...sorry
