Pacifier recommendation for a baby who gags on pacifiers

My 1 month old baby doesn't like pacifiers, and seems to gag on them. She has mild tongue tie which is very likely causing the problem. B"H she is nursing well and seems to be ok with drinking from an Avent bottle.

I would like to get her used to a pacifier if at all possible. So far we tried the Gumdrop and the Nuk pacifiers, and both were a no go.

Any suggestions for a pacifier that a baby that gags easily might like?

Maybe avent will be similar to the bottle? Make sure it's the smallest size.

Try the MAM. Make sure it's newborn size 0-3 months.
Maybe if she has tongue tie a pacifier is not the best thing for her. Talk to your pediatrician before forcing one.

This. Your baby is teaching you an important lesson. She is a different person to you. She has different needs to you. Your job at THIS stage is to fulfill HER needs. As she grows she will then be able to learn to balance her needs with the needs of others. But not yet. Now she just have her needs fulfilled. This is how we learn that Hashem loves us and always acts for our best interests.

This is extremely important - never lose sight of it.

I disagree with the posters above, sleeping with a pacifier for the first 6 month lowers the risk of SIDS. Babies that have pacifiers have an easier time self soothing. Babies that dont have pacifiers can find other things to suck on such as there blankets, or thumb which s a harder habit to break. I used 0-6 months nuk, but in the hospitals they give the preemies avent soothie pacifier. You can Google it. It's a green one peice paci that teaches the babies how to suck in the beginning I wet it before sticking into the babies mouth. Give it to the baby when shes calm. She will spit it out in the beginning keep wetting at sticking in her mouth. I would let her suck on it when I was done nursing her before she fell asleep or after she was done her bottle

My understanding is that in 2019 there isn't a recommendation (from those who recommend these things) to give a pacifier to reduce SIDS. It might just be (unclear) and additional benefit.

My DD's two sons both had tongue tie (the younger one was the worst the surgeon had ever seen!), and both took a pacifier. She bought the smallest pacifiers she could find - mini Mam for one, and a minuscule Tommy Tippee for the other - and kept trying whenever they were calm. BTW, she was told by a lactation consultant that while she is not generally in favor of pushing pacifiers, it can help babies with tongue tie learn to suck better. It was also recommended for her babies because of their reflux.

My baby with tongue tie never liked the Avent soothies that they give in the hospital (I think it was hard to keep in. She liked the regular Avent (free flow I think).

Nanobebe makes a pacifier similar to the avent soothie that is pretty tiny.

I'd skip the paci.

My oldest (3+) is addicted to his paci. We tried a paci with our 2nd, who wasn't into it, so we didn't force it. B"H he's great - sleep trained just as easily, doesn't suck on anything, and we didn't have to force it away from him.

Some babies dont like pacifiers. Other babies would love a pacifier but they need a specific one to work for their needs (in this case tongue tie)
I think everyone giving mussar to OP needs to lay low. Shes the mom and she has her own mommy intuition. A pacifier isnt a bad thing, no need to make it into one.

Now that you e taken care of the pacifier question, I recommend strongly that you get her tongue tie clipped. It's really easy and has no down side. The ent doesn it routinely in one second in the office. She may have difficulty later in with some letter sounds and tongue activities if it is not taken care of.

Before you clip the tongue ask your pediatrician.some drs beleive the tongue can stretch on it's own, like my baby. They can decide base on how bad he tight it is. and if you baby is gaining a healthy weight. You would need a referral from dr anyways. When I went to a ENT and specialist. They just told me tongue tie defenitly clip it. If course that how they make there money. Same like years ago people had operations to remove tonsils
