what would be the problem leaving them on? All you do is listen to the noise nothing wrong with that as far as I know. You obviously cant carry it around the house with you, but you can leave it in certain places.

I asked Rabbi Forst. He said:

1) You can use it if it's very necessary to hear the baby.

2) Do NOT purposely use it yourself (to call someone in a different room or whatever). It should just be picking up background noise.

3) You should NOT buy a monitor that has fancy screens with all types of technology...there should just be a simple red light.

I hope I'm not misquoting him in any way. You should probably ask your own shailah, but this is what I got from asking my rav.

I was told that we can't use it because when you go into the room on Shabbos, you make noise which is transmitted over the monitor. I guess there are differences of opinion, and everyone should ask their own LOR.

we were told that we could use it, but when going into the baby's room, we could not speak at all. One friday night we were tuned into another persons monitor and were getting awful static, and there was nothing we could do to stop it. We stopped using it after that.

Obviously ask your own Rabbi. I'm Lubavitch and our Rav said it is NOT permitted.
