What is chassidish life like?

another question

this might sound kind of strange- and it is not meant to mock how much holiness is attributed to the Rebbe. What I find interesting is that the rebbeish family- I think- attend the regular schools- and one day they grow up and become a Rebbe. Are they holy as children? Are they just respectable people? When they are children can they perform miracles? I am sure some of your DH know personally a rebbeshe boy- and one day he might become Rebbe!

well amother in today's day and age, truthfully, many Rebbes arent deserving of their titles... it's just a title and a show... today the REbbes are the descendants of the previous Rebbes, that's it... on the other hand there are so many dayanim, poskim, roshei yeshivos, and stam talmidei chachamim that began to cultivate still as young children, and they are not Rebbes with chassidim but become gedolim in their own ways.

I'm assuming you mean erev shabbos ... I happen to agree ... we wait with anticipation to eat an honored shabbos meal ... on shabbos ... l'kovod shabbos ... special for shabbos ... I can't stand when people eat before ...

have you ever seen anyone serve a birthday cake with a chunk taken out before the actual birthday - no ... or wear a wedding dress the day before the chasuna - no ...

so why eat shabbos food before shabbos ...

nice analogy Greenn, but you forget that most kallas go for a squillion fittings and things before they wear the dress on the bgi night. We are not talking, necessarily, about real fressing but tasting the food. It sounds great! The whetting the appetite for the kedusha of shabbos. BTW, the food wouldn't really taste the same anyway since it would still be missing that special Shabbos taam on Friday afternoon, right?

Yes, CM I meant tastes all of the different foods not that the Rov eats all the food before Shabbos arrives.

Can I add a question or are people tired of this thread? For those ladies whose DHs go out for mincha/ shalosh seudas/maaariv? This is still Shabbos and could be a really special time for mothers and daughters to spend together. My neighbors seem to basically spend it sitting ont he bench outside my house and schmoozing while the children play, but for the children this probably is really special. Do the women have any minhagim for this time too.

Many women go away to their mothers or siblings and they have a nice 'girls only' shalos seudos. Others just stay home and quickly eat and then either sit outside and shmooze, read or play with the kids.

Wow , you sound like a great mommy.

I wanted to ask why are there so many different types of head coverings for chassidim?Some wear turbans, some wear sheital with a hat, some wear the tichel with a foam at the front either with or without the sheitel. Why two head coverings? etc.

Each of the Rebbeim were raised with special instructions from the time they were born. I would have to look up to see exactly what was for each one, but it was things like wearing a yarmulke from birth, having a special cloth to wrap the baby in, washing negel vaaser after waking up from a nap, etc. The instructions were mainly given by the Rebbe of that time, the baby's grandfather.
There are other things too, the Frierdiker Rebbe wore tzitzis from when he started to walk, and more. If you read the Memoirs of the Frierdiker Rebbe, there are amazing insights into Chinuch that you can learn from the way the Frierdiker Rebbe was raised.

The Frierdiker Rebbe tells of his upbringing in Likkuttei Dibburim, also sefer HaSichos of the Frierdiker Rebbe. Sefer HaToldos Admur MaHaRYaTz, compiled by R' Chanoch Glitzenstein.

About the memoirs: They are the fascinating history of the earliest generations of Chassidus and the leaders of Chassidus, and their forerunners, the Baalei Shem, and is illustrative of Jewish history of that time in general. They detail the life of R. Baruch, the Alter Rebbe's father, and how in search for his path in avodas Hashem, he discovered Chassidus, and became a follower of the Baal Shem Tov. Most of the contents of the Zichronos were related to the Frierdiker Rebbe by his grandmother the tzidkonis, Rebbetzin Rivka, Rebbetzin of the Rebbe Maharash, who heard them directly from the earlier generations of "Beis HaRav".

They "represent an accumulation of memoranda preserved in the family archives or in the oral tradition of the Lubavitcher Rebbeim since the time of the Alter Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Lladi, founder of Chabad Chassidism".

something very odd happened to me a bunch of years ago in bp. easily 15 years. I wonder if anyone else had this occurance.
I was at my moms house and the bell rang, I thought it was for tzedaka so I got some money out, but at the door was a jewish woman ( for sure jewish btw,,),, and she was wearing a very light colored kind of thing like you see in pictures the imahot wear on their heads. so help me her face shone. I asked her about her head covering, and she said her husband liked this sort of covering best. it looked very much like what arab women wear now, but didnt cover her face at all.
I didnt wanna gawk, but how could I help myself?
apparently she made aprons and tichels for shabbat, and she went from door to doot selling. of course I bought from her.
I never saw her again.
does anyone know of this lady?

Hi, I decided to reopen this thread. All that talk about that flier made me think. Why do chassidishe women dress the way they do? Why turban and not a snood? Why seamed stockings instead of see through? Also, why do you have to wear a little shaitel under your hat?

Arita I think that you have a mix-up about Chasidishe women a little.
There are many Chassishe women out there who dress very different one from the other. A lot has to do with what Chassidus they associate with. Some wear what you describe above. Some wear only some of the things you mentioned above and some don't wear any of the above mentioned.

Belz cover their sheitels, but don't wear seams. So does Vizhnitz.

Satmar wear seams, but then their headcoverings may vary from a custom shaitel to a tichel only.

Ger doesn't cover their shaitels and don't wear seams

Bobov like Ger doesn't cover their shaitels and don't wear seams but their women tend to look more Chassidishe in regard to shaitel length and dress.

It also varies from place to place.
Take Satmar for example.
In KY most will wear tichels/shpitzels and cover their shaitels.
In Williamsburg it's probably 50% shpitzels and pillbox hats and 50% uncovered shaitels and covered with just a band.
In Boro Park most go uncovered and blend into the more Boro Parkish type of look as opposed to the KY type of look.

the turban simply because we dont have hair to put in a snood, so we dont need a snood.

seamed stockings so that it doesnt look like feet; the seam shows that it's indeed a stocking.

not a shaitel under the hat, but a hat on top of the shaitel to show that it's not hair.

But they aren't the only Chassidishe women here. I guess there are many more Chassidishe woman on here than you think

And you'll get very different responses from Mama Bear and from Downsyndrome even both associate with the same Chassidus. (first being their headcovering, their way of dress etc.). And that's also the point, to hear all different types and their minhagim. Plus she'll only be getting one point of view. I understand why she'd want to ask here rather than pm a poster or two.
