I'm sorry if I'm coming across unsympathetic and cold-that was not my intention.
I know people in your situation and instead of just kvetching about it they did things on their own!
They didn't sit and blame everyone else around them...what's done was done.
They realized that they are not changing the system so they did/do differently for their own children.
They got GEDs and got BAs and BSs and some of them have Masters degrees.
They put their money in their mouth..(is that the correct phrase?)

Why cant I do both, get a degree (I am working on my masters, as I already mentioned) AND talk about the injustices going on in Satmar? Why are you so uncomfortable hearing about it that you go out of your way to defend an abusive system that did not affect you?

But the system *should* be changed. Yeah, some people can just educate themselves, but that doesn't mean everyone can. Schools need to teach at a level that graduates get diplomas - at the very least!

Kids go to school for 12 years, they should be educated appropriately. If a girl went to a religious school her entire life there should be no reason why she should be saying that she never learned Chumash, Rashi, etc. What is the point of attending religious school if you don't learn about religion directly from the sources itself? And why shouldn't a girls attending religious school learn about her religion directly from the sources? [quote]
The satmar shitah is that girls don't learn chumash or rashi and whoever sends there knows that. And I must say I don't feel like I'm lacking in education because I went to satmar. The subjects that interests me I'm quite well versed at. Ask me anything about history- American, global, jewish and I'll be glad to answer! Very Happy.oh and btw I needed my "non acredited diploma for my job so I guess it's worth something! Smile

You are right but then there is also the right of a parent to raise their child religously as they see fit.

There is no good answer here. Sometimes there is no solution.

I am sorry

I should hope that(some) prisoners don't plan on staying there for the rest of their life.

To add to your first point, I believe that Satmar is pretty straight up with their policy of no diplomas. The only people that you can blame is your parents or whoever chose to send you to that school. It's not as if the school made you work for twelve years, pretending that you will get that diploma and then said that they are not giving you one.

At this point, stop kvetching and putting the blame elsewhere. Get your GED(if you haven't yet-I'm not sure whether or not you stated that you do), and make different decisions for your children. They will most likely be grateful to you.

I know quite a few Satmar, Skver etc.. graduates with advanced degrees. The key is to stop regretting the past and just focus on the future.

Actually, I blame the US govt for not enforcing their own laws... If I were Governor Cuomo or President Trump ( (I wish), I would say that all private religious schools lose all lunch aid, bussing, spec ed money or any tax dollars PERIOD if they don't meet state education requirements...

I would send inspectors on surprise visits to test the children with random questions on english govt, math the way they do in Quebec and Ontario..

If a school fails, all the parents sending children there lose their food stamps, WIC and any other assistance..

Actually, it's the BP Vien that was Puke . I don't know anything about any other branch because I don't care to ask nor hear. My opinion is based on my experience in BP Vien high school whose hanhalla, as I mentioned upthread, is responsible for quite a few OTD girls and produced some very messed up people.

The law in Canada is that parents are obligated to provide their children with an adequate education. The schools that provide primarily religious ed do not receive any government funding and are completely legal. The ministry of education has been working with these schools (some chassidishe chedarim and the Satmar girls' school) to get all of the children registered in the homeschooling program of the English Montreal School Board.
Education is not a communal responsibility, it is a parental obligation! I do not understand why the people who have issues with the quality of their education do not direct their ire at the guilty party - their parents.

Because you don't have the "right" to systematically deprive your kids of an adequate education! That's not a real right! That's a made-up one!

Education is a broad term. So is adequate.

our religious rights are precious to us! if the government is the one to decide exactly what our curriculum should be I'd rather home school. I dont want my kids to learn about evolution, s-x education, and anything I dont feel is in line with the chinuch I want to give them. hashem yishmor if whatever my kids should learn should be upto the goverment. why cant people see the problem with that?

No one wants to take away your religious rights. But you have to use your own money to educate your kids how you see fit instead of using tax dollars.

There are standards though that schools follow. In NY you can get an accredited diploma or a regents diploma. Satmar doesn't offer either one which is unfair to the girls.

How do we know that the girls are actually learning anything that they would need a bus to get to school? How do we know that the lunch money is used for lunch and not for other things? etc.

do you check into every muslim school what they learn? do you agree with their education? you can see send down inspectors to make sure lunch program actually goes for lunch (which they do send inspectors) but that has nothing to do with the education given.
