I learned in seminary that according to the Chida it is permissible to "elevate" a non jewish song by putting Jewish words to it. But the truth is, all music is influenced from the culture from which it originated. Sephardi music sounds very similar to Arabic music because they are from the same region. So is there really such a thing as Jewish music?

Well you always get composers making their own music, yes some of it might have come from certain influences, but it is still their music. So with Jewish composers who write their own music, that is Jewish. If they just take a song from somewhere and add their own words that is not really Jewish music, it's recycled.
