Coming from a nutritionist - you DO NOT need to eat animal products to get enough protein (or iron). If you are a "normal" healthy person and eat a balenced, healthy diet you can easily get enough protein. The vegetarians or vegans who typically have problems are the ones who base their diet around french fries and junk food.
In fact, cultures or groups of people who eat a vegetarian or quasi-vegetarian diet have a much lower rate of heart disease as well as certain types of cancers than the average meat eater, even when factors like smoking, genes, exercise, etc. are taken into account.
