What kind of Potatoes & Onions you use for Cholent?

Eventhough I am married many years and cook alot I am still confused .
Any one here can explain to me the differences please?
For Cholent-which potatoes are the best?Idaho,Red or White?
What kind of onions are best for cooking?Spanish,Vidalia Yellow?

I wouldn't use red potatoes in the cholent. And I would also use regular yellow onions.

Yellow potatoes and yellow onions! (easy to remember)

I also recently started putting in whole garlic cloves. Like 5 or 6 for a med to lg cholent. They give off a mild flavor, not at all spicy in the cholent.

My husband and I dig through the pot to find them -- they have such a yummy, mellow flavor and they're super healthful! My mouth is watering just writing about it!

If you leave the skin on the garlic they are easier to find because they don't get mushed, and you pop all the yummy garlic out and spread it on challah.
