Hadasa, that was a nice explanation. there are more details also, although you were pretty thorough. I cant remember offhand exactly, but theres a nice sicha, I think about Chanukah, where the Rebbe says that above each person is a Ner and the fuel is Torah and Mitzvos. can anyone help me out here?

I think non Jews sometimes also refer to people as candles in poetry.
The thing is though, neshama's don't get blown out when we die and don't get blown out by the wind of age or deasease either, it just leaves our body.
I think maybe you can say our bodies are like lanterns and our souls are like flames and when we die it's the flame being taken out the lantern.
I think Neshamas are seen as parallel to flames rather than candles, coz then you would be allowed to blow out a match.
