ok, so lately ive been trying the trick I learned about here on imamother, that is, to freeze raw challah dough and let it rise after I defrost it just before baking.
turns out that it has worked well in the past put this past week I tried it and the dough just wouldn't rise! any advice?

Is it old? You can't freeze a challah like that forever.

it could be it was pretty old now that you mention it. . . how long do you think is too long to leave frozen dough in the freezer?

I wouldn't leave it over a few weeks; certainly not a month.

I actually sometimes keep some dough in the fridge and the kids pull off a piece and make a fresh roll when they're in the mood.

In pre-school, we sometimes have frozen dough, and it could be frozen even more than a month.
You just have to give it more time to let it rise than if it was 1-2 weeks in freezer.
I would take it out of the bag or whatever it's in, and put it in a different bowl and leave it for awhile. You can also try putting it over a hot/warm oven or radiator to quicken the process.
Good Luck and don't give up!
