Depends on the size of the salmon! When I buy a whole salmon and the fish store fillets it for me I usually get around 20 -- 25 pieces out of it. But it does vary.

Tell us how many pounds your salmon is, and if you want appetizer size slices (4 oz.), regular size (6 oz.), or steak size (8 oz.)

I don't know the size. I'm just trying to figure out if buying a whole salmon will be too much for us or not. I just want to get a ballpark idea of how many pieces. I'm seeing it's about 20, give or take a few depending on the size...right?

You get two fillets out of one salmon. You can cut the fillets into more pieces if you want. I usually get 8-9 nice size pieces out of one fillet, so 17-18 portions from one fish.

You can get a baby salmon, which is smaller and tastier.

You can buy a whole salmon, fillet it and then freeze the extras for another time if there is too much.
