Print out different pics of food and get them to sort into milky and meaty. Explain that milk comes from cows, cheese is made from milk etc. cut out 2 rectangles of card one blue, one red, stick them on a paper so that it is like 2 cupboard doors opening. Glue meaty food and red dishes on red side and milky food and blue dishes on blue side. Cut an old red and blue tea towel and glue on cupboard doors. Hope this makes some sense. Talk about waiting between meat and milk - give ideas for different meals and they have to say whether it's ok or not. Eg chicken and a yogurt sauce. Explain parev.

OP- your post is dated Feb. 1; I'm so impressed that you plan so far a head. So you might not even see this, but I'll post it anyway, you might want to add it to whatever you decided to do. (or for next year.)
What I did is based on the coloring pages in aish.com (Torah portion). I said Hashem tells us how to be fair and how to be kind. Examples of "fair" are paying back more sheep for a stolen sheep, paying if your cow eats s/o elses grass, and paying if an animal dies cuz of a pit you dug. "Kind" is helping your enemy unload his donkey.
I have 3 year olds, I'm not sure if they get it; Your 5's surely would.
