I never washed any of my boys yarmulkas at any age. I don't like the way it looks afterwards. They wear velvet ones. Other people have done it, but I find it gets ruined.

The velvet Shabbat one I haven't washed. They have cordoruy for during the week and I wash those on an as-needed basis.

Unfortunately as often as he throws them in the toilet!
BA"H I think we are getting past that, otherwise I wouldn't wash unless they were dirty

When ds was preschool age, and like someone else pointed out, they fall into the toilet, or in the mud outside... I changed his daily. Shower, new set of undies / clothes, including new kappel. I buy the machine washable velvet. Wash on cold delicate, let air dry. Now that he's older, if he sweats in the summer, we do daily as well. Otherwise, if it doesnt fall and he's clean... We change for shabbos. I know most people would never change daily. This is how I grew up, and glad I was.
Especialy after seeing dh use his kappel for hot pots, to open the lid. The change the bulb... And God knows what else! So yeah, we change his often too.
