Hotmama in another thread said already that she lives in Lakewood Nj,

I guess I missed that, since I don't read every single thread on this board.

and once I made aliyah and told people that I came from teaneck nj they said "oh, teaneck ir hakodesh"

I always hated hearing it. only places in israel, to me, get the status as a kodesh place.

bnei brak, petach tikvah, beitar

I despise hearing a place like lakewood or monsey or anywhere theres a yeshiva referred to as that. the places that Ruchel are listing are legitimate places where huge talmidei chachamim gav the city these names. at that time they had never been to yerushalayim so it was literally the yerushalayim of their corner of the world.

I know I know, im too serious and cant take a joke. too bad.

totally not true. I completely agree with you clarivka. I also dont like hearing such places being called ir hakodesh.

Interesting, I have never heard of petach tikvah or beitar. but you learn new things every day Smile

Bnei Brak is not called an ir kodesh, but it is the place the Tanaim in the Hagaddah gathered and learned Torah all night.

I would think Shilo would also have that distinction.

Why? What are the criteria?

Oh, I don't know, but I would think that having the Mishkan there for a couple years would have given it Ir haKodesh status for a while.

But the traditional four are as Isramom wrote. Shilo isn't mentioned anywhere as being an ir hakodesh, AFAIK.
