I know what a kvatter is-
where did this originate?
please explain anything and everything about being a kvatter!
why are childless couples asked to be a kvatter?

Al pi the ATIME board, it's not such a strong segulah, unless the baby would not have had a bris otherwise.

There is no documentation that brings down any source that being a Kvatter is a segulah for children.
However.
A couple, who until this point (probably) has not had the Zechus to make their own Brit is now asked to participate in this wonderful Mitzvah. So... by being asked to be Kvatterim, they are able to perform a role in the Mitzvah and thereby gain Zechus from it.
Having said that, before you ask a couple who has been married for a few years and has no children to be Kvatter at your Brit, please understand that depending on the relationship you have with this couple, they might not be receptive to agreeing to do it. (If you're good friends with them as opposed to say the friend of a friend). Also, if they are going through IF, the hormones might be raging, they may have CV"S just received bad news... so... proceed with caution...
