Today's Mitzvot (Day 75 of 339):
Negative Mitzvah 262
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Negative Mitzvah 262: It is forbidden to neglect a wife's rights
-Exodus 21:10 "He shall not diminish her food, her clothing,
or rights of marriage"
When a master (or his son) marries his Jewish maidservant,
he must treat her properly.
The Torah cautions him not to neglect her rights and provide
her with all her needs. This Negative Mitzvah applies not only
to a maidservant, but any Jewish wife.

Positive Mitzvah 212: To Be Fruitful and Multiply
-Genesis 1:28 "Be fruitful and multiply"
HaShem created the world for people to live in.
He wants the Jewish nation to grow and expand, ensuring the future of many generations of people to follow the Torah.
This Positive Mitzvah commands us to have children.

Tanya: Now these three garments (p. 13)...in these three
garments (p. 15).
It is customary that one not Davening with a minyan says the opening (p. 241) and closing (p. 245) b'rachot of Hallel even on days when "half Hallel" (1) is said.
In the concluding paragraph, Yehal'lucha (p.245) omit the word "Al. All Tefillin (2) should be worn (then, later, taken off) before Musaf (p. 245), but the daily Torah lessons are studied after concluding the entire service.

Perceptive Repair

Today's Mitzvot (Day 100 of 339):
Negative Mitzvot 193, 153, 194; Positive Mitzvah 146

Negative Mitzvah 193: It is forbidden to eat fruit grown in
a vineyard which has been planted with
different types of seeds
-Deuteronomy 22:9 "You shall not plant your vineyard with different
species of seeds; otherwise the fruit of the
seed which you have planted and the fruit of the
vineyard will be forfeited"
This Negative Mitzvah prohibits the planting of grain seeds and
grape seeds together in the same vineyard.
We are forbidden to eat any grapes or crops that grow in such
a vineyard and the produce must be burned.

Negative Mitzvah 153: We are forbidden to eat "Tevel"
-Leviticus 22:15. "And they shall not profane the holy things of
the children of Israel, which they offer to the
L-rd"
It is necessary to peel an orange before eating it, or cut it open
so the fruit can be separated from the peel.
Did you ever try getting at the fruit without removing or cutting
through the peel?!
In the same way, the Torah teaches us that we must we must "peel
away" - set aside the Terumah and Ma'aser to be given to the
Priests and Levites.
Only after we "peel away" the portion that we may not eat, can
we enjoy the rest of the fruit, which is our portion.
Produce which has not had the Terumah and Ma'aser separated from
it, is called "Tevel".
We are forbidden to eat such food until the Terumah and Ma'aser
are separated.
Today, even though the Beit Hamikdash has not yet been rebuilt,
this Negative Mitzvah still applies in Eretz Yisrael.
We must still separate the amount that we would have been required
to give to the Priests and Levites, and only then are we are
allowed to eat the food.
In Eretz Yisrael, many food products are stamped with the seal of
the Rabbinate or Beit Din, which assures us that the food is not
Tevel.
The food industry hires Rabbis to fulfill this Negative Mitzvah
by separating the portions required from the large amount of food
brought straight from the farms before it is sold or packaged.
This makes it easy to shop in the supermarkets and grocery stores,
because we no longer need to separate the portions of Terumah and
Ma'aser from each package, since it has already been done for us.
However, in order to be sure, remember to look on the package for
a stamp or seal from the Rabbinate or Beit Din.

Negative Mitzvah 194: It is forbidden to drink "Yayin Nesech"
-Deuteronomy 32:38 "Who eat the fat of their sacrifices, and drink
the wine of their libations"
This Negative Mitzvah prohibits us from drinking the wine of non-
Jews that has been used for idol worship.
Our Rabbis added to this commandment and forbade the drinking of
any wine which has been made or touched by non-Jews. Such wine is
called "S'tam Yaynum".
Through this Negative Mitzvah, as with some others, we can see that
"kosher" does not only mean the ingredients that go into a product.
Food can become non-kosher in the way it is prepared or handled.

Positive Mitzvah 146: "Shechitah" - Slaughtering Animals for Food
-Deuteronomy 12:21 "And you shall slaughter of your cattle and of your
sheep...as I have commanded you"
If you received a new computerized game as a gift for your birthday,
you would be anxious to use it. Before beginning, you would have to
read the instructions and follow them precisely, otherwise the game
might not work properly.
In the Torah, HaShem gave us certain laws which, when followed
correctly, enable man to eat animals and get proper nourishment.
The Torah allows us to eat these animals only after specific
preparation, involving proper slaughtering and koshering.
This special type of slaughtering is called Shechitah.
We may not eat any meat unless it has undergone a proper Shechitah,
by a qualified individual who is called a "Shochet."

Matching Worlds

Depression, anxiety and pessimism damage the channels of blessing from Above.
The Zohar explains that there is a lower world -- our world -- and there is a higher world. Our world is meant to continuously receive from that higher world, but always according to our personal state of mind.
If we are glowing with joy and vitality, then that world shines upon us in its full glory.
But if it we wallow in depression and anxiety, then we can only receive the metered trickle that squeezes through a constricted channel.
That is why King David said, “Serve G-d with joy!” Because your joy here draws upon you another joy from above.

Following Advice
----------------
There is no place for worry. You try to decide a course of action. If you do not have the experience to decide, ask the advice of someone who does --a parent, a teacher, an expert --someone reliable, but also someone who is conscientious of your spiritual path.
Once you have decided what should be done, follow that course, confident that since you are doing what you believe in, the Master of All Things will support your decision.

Today's Mitzvot (Day 130 of 339):
Negative Mitzvah 137

Negative Mitzvah 137: A "Chalalah" may not eat from the portion of
the Priest
- Leviticus 22:12 And if a priest's daughter is married to a common
man, she shall not eat of that which is set apart
of the holy [foods]"
The Torah gives many laws specifically to the priests.
These laws instruct them how to conduct themselves, whom they may marry, what they must wear, and how they offer sacrifices.
When a priest marries a woman forbidden to him by Torah Law, the woman is considered a "Chalalah."
She is not allowed to eat from sacrificial meat that a priest is usually entitled to.
This Negative Mitzvah also prohibits the daughter of a priest who married a non-priest from eating Terumah as long as she is married to this man or any of her children are alive

Ahava, affection, is the breath of life in the Avoda of Chassidus.
It is the thread that binds chassidim to each other, that binds Rebbe to chassidim and chassidim to Rebbe.
Ahava works in a direct way (initiated affection) and also in a reflective way (responding to the other's affection). It knows no barriers and transcends the limits of time and place.

Not a Luxury
------------
The natural tendency is to treat matters of the spirit as luxury items -- sort of an appendage to life. Eating, sleeping, making money -- these things are given priority and the time dedicated to them is sacrosanct. But prayer, meditation and study fit in only when you feel like it, and are pushed aside on the slightest whim.
You've got to make your priorities faithful to your inner self. You've got to ask yourself if this is what your life is all about.
Set a schedule for spiritually enriching activities. Be as tough with that schedule as a workaholic would be with his business.

Introduction to Mitzvot 79 - 82: The Uniqueness of the First-born
In Egypt, the tenth and final plague, which led to the exodus of the Jewish people, was the slaughter of all Egyptian first-born men and animals.
HaShem guarded the homes of the Jews and their first born remained unharmed.
The Torah tells us that HaShem then claimed for Himself the first-born of the Jews and their beasts, and declared them holy.
Certain Mitzvot apply only to the first-born.

Positive Mitzvah 80: Redeeming First-born Sons
-Numbers 18:15 "Nevertheless the first-born of man you must
surely redeem"
Since our first-born sons were claimed by HaShem, they must be redeemed by giving five silver coins to the priest.
Fathers should fulfill this Positive Mitzvah when the baby boy is one month old. This is called the Pidyon HaBen.
If for some reason the Pidyon HaBen did not take place at that time, the first-born son must carry out the Pidyon HaBen himself.

Positive Mitzvah 81: Redeeming First-born Donkeys
-Exodus 34:20 "The first-born of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb"
The specialty of the first-born affects only one non-kosher animal - the donkey.
Since a non-kosher animal cannot be sacrificed, it must be redeemed.
Its owner is commanded to pay the priest its value or give him a lamb in exchange

The Alter Rebbe once summoned a young disciple of the Maggid and said to him in his customary chant: "I have the mitzva of "teach them to your children." (1) You have the mitzva of sustaining and providing for your family. Let us make an exchange. I will give you what you need to fulfill your mitzva and you will teach my son (who was later the Mitteler Rebbe).
Then the Rebbe explained the method of instruction:
The first thing is to teach the letters, Alef, Beit and so on.
What is an Alef? A dot above, a dot below, and a line between this is an Alef.
A child must know that the Alef of Torah is a Yud (2) above,
a Yud below, and a line of faith that joins them.
Another version: A yud above - this is the soul; a yid (Jew) below
- this is the body; a line of Yir'at Shamayim (fear of Heaven) in the center.
Footnotes: (1) Devarim 11:19.
(2) The letter Yud is basically a dot, a point,
undimensioned, indivisible, irreducible. "Above," it
refers to G-d in His Essence; "below" it refers to the
essence of the soul of every Jew. The "connection"
between G-d and soul is faith.

Before the coming of Moshiach, a very special rainbow will appear. This rainbow will be so bright that all rainbows that have appeared on earth will seem very dim and weak in comparison. The bright strong colors of this rainbow are a sign that the Redemption is about to come. It is this rainbow, the Zohar tells us, that G-d was speaking about when He said to Noah (Gen. 9:16), "I will look at it to recall the eternal promise." (Zohar 1:72b as quoted in Discover Moshiach)

Prepare yourself with this meditation, and when you feel anger overcoming you, run through it in your mind:
Know that all that befalls you comes from a single Source, that there is nothing outside of that Oneness to be blamed for any event in the universe.
And although this person who insulted you, or hurt you, or damaged your property, is granted free choice and is held culpable for his decision to do wrong -- that is his problem. That it had to happen to you -- that is between you and the One Above.
