The sauce is exactly the same as sweet and sour meatballs except with a defrosted fish loaf shaped into balls
( perfect balls if your hands are wet )
Serve Hot or cold
everyone I have incl guests,kids, tots, grown-ups love this simple dish

have been meening to do this for ages!!
defrost 1 roll of fish
1 egg beaten
matzo meal
oil..
Heat oil..
take a hand full of fish mix, dip in egg then matzo ball ( likie you would a shnitzel)
fry...
YUMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I had no idea it was british. when zu couldn't gain weight I started doing it on my own cause he I was trying everything and anything. he loves this fish!

Defrost the log/s and then spray a round baking pan with non-stick cooking spray. press the mixture into the pan and smooth over the top. Bake in a moderate (350/180) oven for over an hour UNCOVERED. It should brown and should NOT be wobbly. To serve slice as you would a cake. DELICIOUS!

Do as above but pour marinara sauce on top before baking. when you slice it looks like pizza - somehow...I've never done this one before!

Fry an onion, some garlic, red and green peppers and some italian parsley. add tomato paste (the thick stuff in aussie it's called paste) some chilli, sugar (to taste), salt and pepper. Add water until the whole thing becomes the consistency of a sauce.
Take a frozen log and unwrap it from the paper. place in a baking dish and pour the sauce on top (make sure to leave some pieces of pepper on the top...) Bake in a modderate oven for 1 1/2 hrs or so until the top is sort of crusty and not wobbly.
this is best eaten cold...it's YUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUm

and here I am replying to myself...you know you're crazy when...
anyhow - another delicious recipe which isn't mine but is YUMMMM
take a good white fish which is great for frying...
make a batter and fry the fish...
Then place them in a baking tray after they've cooled somewhat, pour over marinara sauce - I use the one with green bell peppler and mushroom and bake in the oven...IT"S YUM!! add some water to just 'dilute' the sauce as its' very rich.
the softness of the battered fillets then baked in a sauce makes this fish melt in your mouth...

I do klotzkashe's recipe # 1, but just stick the loaf on a cookie sheet. Bake at 350- for 25 minutes uncovered, then 30-35 min. covered. Then it looks the same as the gefilte fish loaves, but I like how it tastes so much more (not as fishy and watery)! my mom does this too, but puts the tomato sauce on top (as in recipe #2). usually I'll sprinkle a little sugar and paprika on top. I usually use Ungar's fish, or our local grocery store's loaves.

I actually do a combination of the 3 recipes- unwrap it, put loaf in baking pan, cover with tomato sauce and spices, layer different kinds of vegetables (onions, pepper, tomato, mushrooms, carrots) on top and around, and bake.

FOr those of you wondering about the thread [original thread title was Raskin's fish 3 ways-mod] - I use Benz's too, however I used the name Raskin's becuase I was referring to that style of american-style gefilte fish. here in australia, the local fish-store - Yumi's - makes their own gefilteh fish and it doesn't work as nicely, well or deliciously as with american logs.
personally I love benz's even more than raskins and in australia benz is $8 a log and raskins is almost $16!!!

I am looking for a recipe for fish loaves. There is one that goes something like this: Defrost fish loaf. Add eggs, matza meal, carrots and celery(maybe other veg). Blend in food processor. Bake. Does anyone know of amounts to use for a recipe like this, what temp and for how long to bake I? Covered/uncovered? What other veg can be added?

really? Do you leave it in the wrapper when baking or take it out? When I leave it in the wrapper it does shrink, but not out of the wrapper. hm.
Our favorite is I slice it while it is 3/4ths frozen. I make an egg wash. I mix paprica, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and corn flake crums. I dip the fish slice in the egg wash, than corn flake mixture. Than bake it at 400 covered until it seems done. yummy.
you can also fry them and they are also yum.

No I usually defrost the roll or runit under warm water (which I've been doing lately) so that I can just remove the wrapping then bake it. I line the bottom of the pan with a little of olive oil and onions then lay the fish ontop.

we jsut let the roll defrost enough to cut, then slice and fry... delicious
my mother always bought frsh ground fish and spiced and made rolls or balls and boiledi t, was v good

Is there any problem with baking fish uncovered in an oven if meat was cooked in it? I was told once by a rav not to fry fish in a frying pan that is fleishig but I can't remember what he said about the oven.

I'm fed up of plain gefilte fish. Anyone have any original recipes for fish balls, using the uncooked fish loaf. (I already have a recipe wit diced tomatoes, so s/t else if possible)
