I was made aware that sometimes people (whether modern, chasidish or neither) make their peyos way too short which entails transgressing a Biblical prohibition!

With men who have sideburns, they can't shave them so close to the skin! There must be 40 hairs that can be bent back on themselves.

Interesting. I just happened to read yesterday a source (which I don't think was Halacha l'maasa but interesting anyway) that the prohibition of Peyos is the same as teh beard, and just like the beard can be cut but not shaved (according to some) so too the Peyos.

It can be down to their chins but if it's cut/shaved too close, then it violates a biblical law!

motek why is it your business to bring this up, isn't it up to our husbands not us where their payos are up to?

Have you seen the "Do you give your husbands a haircut" thread and poll?

It's certainly the business of those wives who cut their husband's and son's hair to know what they're doing!

And you know what? It's also good to know if you take your son(s) to the barber shop.

It's a halacha and it's good to know.

My husband just met someone who had a fresh haircut who obviously was unaware of this halacha because his sideburns were shaved extremely close to the face. The more of us who know the halacha, the less likely people will inadvertently transgress it.

I also take bigger boys sometimes. One of mine was so shy that I had to go & show them the bone (ds wanted short sideburns then) Although they usualy know if you go to a place that do a lot of frum pple. You still have to watch. My little boys like their payos, dh has a little past the bone, bigger ds has chasidish payos.

DH went to very well respected yeshiva in Brooklyn and he was taught that they cannot be cut shorter that the cheekbone. That is the cut off point so to speak, no pun intended. Other that that down to your pupick or down to your toes, your business, doesn't make you a better jew.

I heard that according to kabala it can't be too long that the peyos mix with the beard, which is why lubavitch don't have long peyos like other chassidim do.
I'll try and enquire more about that.

(ok I know you were refering to the point about it not being shaved too close and too true, but just thought it would be interesting to point out why lubavitch are different then most other chassidim in that respect)
