parshas Beshalach 15:20
"And Miriam the prophetess, sister of Aharon, took the tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and dancing."
Rashi: the righteous women of the generation were confident that Hashem would do miracles for them and they took tambourines out with them from Egypt
unlike the men, who didn't have instruments!
the Arizal says that the generation of Geula is the reincarnation of the generation that left Egypt, so do you have a tambourine?

Do you have to learn to play it too? What if you're tone deaf?

ah too bad, "not yet" would have been a good one to write, and you can't edit polls
tambourines are great for unmusically inclined people (well, up to a point ... ) because you don't need to practice scales and musical compositions for years, even months ... even days 8) though you can drive someone crazy by constantly banging or shaking it!
have any of you gone to a Tambourine Decorating Workshop? I decorated my tambourine at one of these workshops years ago. They sell plain tambourines, different sizes, different prices, and then you get to decorate it with colored paints, glitter, ribbons, flowers, so you can personalize it with a pasuk of your choosing, a picture etc.
click on the image in this link to see a stunning painting of a tambourine

and here's an essay about Miriam, righteous women of Egypt, and tambourines

YES I have one too Motek. I inherited this one from my mom who decorated it at one of those workshops. So its really special to me. For me its like a physical peice of the Geula.

I happen to have one--a real professional instrument-- decorated with a picture of a dancing girl and "roni vesimchi bat tziyon' . I was real excited b/c I thought that was the haftarah of the week our daughter was born but, alas I was wrong. It's pretty, though.

We have two. One is in the shape of a cow (it's my daughter's.) We also have four guitars, two (or maybe more) electronic keyboards, and more than half a dozen harmonicas, plus a xylophone. I think we are ready!

if we don't have a tambourine does that mean we're not ready and waiting for moshiach?!?

I voted "huh?" but reall my answer is no - cuz I have heard of it. it's a lubavitch idea, basically, though. right?
and mother48, althoughit's a nice thing -- you can definately be ready for moshiach without one!!!!!!!!!! in fact, there are some more important things....like working on ones middos, etc. (not attacking anyone, just looking at priorities in life)

actually, it's a Jewish-women-in-Egypt idea (see sources in first post)

hmmm, I wonder whether Miriam the prophetess thought of that ...

hey, when Moshiach comes we will form an imamother circle and dance with our instruments! What I meant, though, is that many of us need basic Moshiach preps working on ourselves first. I hope you did not take any offense. I'm talking about myself!

and perhaps ONE of the things we can work on is strengthening our belief in the imminent coming of Moshiach (one of the 13 Principles of Faith)!
after all, the reason the women in Egypt prepared instruments was not in order to have a better musical experience, but to express their faith
