I cover it fr about an hour and 15 min, then uncover it for the last 15 minutes or so. I also turn up the oven higher while it's uncovered to make it a bit browner on top. (Otherwise dh thinks it's raw!)

Yes you can get it here - though its expensive - I use half a loaf at a time. There are cheaper israili brands but I don't like their taste.

I make my own gefilte loaves from scratch,ie buy fish mince it etc.I always bake it in the oven.Put water in the pan, add salt pepper& sugar then I take a can of tomato onion add fresh garlic to it pour over fish.Bake uncovered for 45min& voila,delicious!

That's what I was afraid of!!! Sad

Every time I walk by the fish store in the shuk or my local mall I think about learning how to make my own, but I have NO clue how to go about it...my SMIL makes her own and has a fabulous recipe (unfortunately only see her about once a year!), but I don't know how to go from whole fish to minced and boned! Anyone have easy instructions?

I always bake my gefilte fish. boiled gefilte fish does not appeal to me. one thing I do is smear lite mayo all over it and then cover it all over with flavored bread crumbs, and bake uncovered at 350 for 2 hrs. yummmmmmy.

or you can mix in some ketchup to the mayo, the add the breadcrumbs, and bake.

I make mine this way:

Place unwrapped loaf into pan. (I actually use a 9 x 13, and the fish kind of flattens out a bit, which I like)
Slice 2 onions and put them on and around the fish.
Pour about 1/2 a cup of honey over the entire fish.
Place 2 peeled carrots on either side of the fish.
Cover and bake for about 1.5 hours.

Comes out DELICIOUS!! The onions get all carmalized and the fish has a great flavor!!

I made this recipe last night and I finally made a gefilte fish that I am really excited about!!! It smelled yummy and I can't wait to try it with friends tonight!!!!!
