Gefilte Fish in the Oven

I know it can be done - several people told me that they do it but I cant remember who Rolling Eyes


Here are my questions

How long do you cook it for?

Do you use the same amount of ingredients?

I put the loaf of fish with the paper still on it in a small loaf pan, the size that just fits the loaf of fish. Here's the important part: Add two tablespoons of water, not more. You can add spices if you want, I don't. Double wrap it with foil, make sure it's well sealed, and bake for 2 hours at 350. You can put carrots in if you want, I sometimes put baby carrots, but they usually end up crunchy, not soft. I have thought of putting in canned slice carrots, then you don't have to worry about them cooking.
This is how I always make my fish. No pot to clean and the fish isn't soggy.

there are many ways to make gefilta fish in the oven.

you can leave it wrapped in the paper and add water to the pan and some spices. cover it and bake for 2 hrs.

you can unwrap it and while its frozen put on tomatoe sauce with spices and then bake it

I do it like this but I put in much more water - enough that half the fish is covered. I bake it for 1.5 hours.

I just plop an unwrapped loaf in a pan the right size sprayed with PAM. Bake on 300 for between 1-2 hrs (until it swells up a bit and turns brown a bit on top). It's a little different than boiled fish, but we like it.

I cook it unwrapped in a pan that is a close to the width of the loaf as possible (since it flattens out otherwise), or wrap it well in aluminum foil for it to keep its shape, then I pour tomato sauce over it and cook covered for 90 min at 350. Tomato sauce can of course be omitted...I also put a little cooking spray on the bottom of the pan or aluminum foil.

I unwrap mine, put it in an aluminum pan, put diced peppers, onions, tomatoes, celery, etc... all around it. And then I shmear it with mayo, and then "drizzle" salsa on it- so its not totally coated, but all will have some salsa flavor.
It comes out delish.
I cook till it looks hardened.

I just use a jar of salsa on the loaf mixed with a little sugar, and bake. Yum.

Oh, the gefilte fish I buy is really sweet, so it goes great with the salsa I use.


The first time I had baked gefilte fish was at my cousins- with the veggies, as I mentioned, plus carrots (yes, they came out crunchy, but that was fine) and sprinkled with salt and pepper and thats it. It was also really great!

My friend bakes her fish in white wine! It's great!

I do it two ways- either I put the loaf in the pan w/o water, cover, and bake for 1 1/2-2 hours, or I pour a jar of veggie pasta sauce over it, cover, and bake. You can also mix some Moroccan seasoning into the sauce for a quick Moroccan fish!

I defrost the loaf. Spray a loaf pan with pam put the fish in. I just sprinkle garlic powder and onion powder bake uncovered at 400 for about 45-55 mins. It gets a brown crust on top. It;s delicious.
You can also add a little bit of red wine and cumin, bake uncovered 400 till brown on top. The aroma is delicious!

I only make it in the oven. Take frozen roll out of paper. Put in foil loaf pan. Smear top with 1/3 cup tomato sauce. Cover tightly in foil. Bake at 350 for 2 1/2 hours.

Q1: do you defrost the log first or not?

Q2: the mix we get seems to be salted to be boiled, so when I bake it in the oven it comes out a bit too salty. Any solution?

you know you can cook gefilta fish in non disposable pans too. and the shape of pan doesn't matter...the loaf keeps its shape.

I usually throw some sort of homemade tomato sauce over it. I once used a can of ready made tomato sauce and I got so many compliments though.

seraph maybe you can try matbucha instead of the salsa- it's pretty similar though it prob depends on the brand.

I unwrap mine (still frozen) run under water to help get paper off; rub with olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt & pepper, garlic powder, paprika and oregano (sometimes I use chilli powder and cumin) - bake at 350 for 90 min.
