| |
I work from home as do most people in my small company. We respond almost exclusively by emails. Recently, they hired a few more people and 2 of the new hires have the same first name as me and last names are sequential in the alphabet (Rivki O, Rivki P and Rivki Q)
Quite a few times now I've gotten emails addressed to someone else. Usually it's not such a big deal. I just respond with "I think you meant one of the others. I'm not the only one anymore", etc. But the other day, I actually got a fairly sensitive email that I started reading, realized had nothing to do with me and about a minute later got another email with the subject saying "DON'T READ MY LAST E-MAIL!!!"
I've been trying to decide if I should send a blanket e-mail to everyone letting them know there are several people with the same name and make sure you know who you're writing to. I wasn't sure if:
a - this is appropriate
b- how to word it politely without sounding snotty

| I say to go for it, but do so very tactfully. You said it's a small company--can an HR person or the boss send it out? If not, e-mail the other two ladies. Ask if you can send out an e-mail to the entire company, signed by the three of you, announcing yourselves and your different roles in the company. "Hi everyone, We hope everyone is enjoying this lovely day. We thought we'd write because we the three of us have the same beautiful name. We just wanted to make sure that everyone knows that there are now three Rivkies here--Rivki O, Rivki S, etc."

| CAn you find out about changing your email format, so you now become rSmith, etc, and this would be a good time to remind people to only use work email for work related stuff

ouch ... totally have to change their bad habits ... tell them you also have faces and to think of whose connected to which e-mail address ... not everybody is sensitive enough to realize something is personal ... but make this a general issue and not in regard to that particular e-mail or person who sent it ... _________________ don't wonder why people go crazy ... rather wonder why we don't

I second Yocheved's advice for the 3 of you to write an email to everyone. Using different email address formats would be ideal, as Kumphort suggested, but there could be tons of important contacts who know your current email address, so it would be a project to change. Maybe the new girls could change, but who knows how petty they are. "Why do *I* have to change!"
But on the other hand, isn't there a better paid manager or supervisor you could explain this to? I feel it would really fall to them to clear this up for you. (And they could arbitrarily change the new girls' addresses.)

We actually don't have work-specific email addresses. It's your own personal already exisiting so they are different: rivkiq@yahoo and avirivki@gmail, etc

Except for 2 of the "higher-ups", I've never met any of my co-workers. Everyone works from home from various cities and we all communicate by email, chat and the occasional phone call.
