Did anyone in Lakewood every purchase a baby carrier for infant. If so where? I'd like to go some where we they can advice me and I can try it on first. I have no clue if such a store exists nearby.

I don't know Lakewood stores but I do know that the big chain stores that sell baby gear generally do--Babies R Us, Buy Buy Baby, Target, etc.

Thanks. I saw in Target they had one choice. And it was in a box so you couldn't try it on first. I was really hoping for more choices that I could try on first. I was hoping that maybe there are stores that speciliaze in this can can give advice. But I haven't heard of any.

thank - but Piccolino is men working there - and I doubt they actually wore the carriers themselves, and I also can't imagine the women working at Juvenile Planet wearting the carriers (if they sell them - I don't remember seeing them there - but it could be they have them).

I'd really like to go to a place that can advise me on them.

What are you looking for? "Carrier" is kind of generic. Do you want a wrap style? A "Snugli"/Baby Bjorn style? A sling? A back carrier (like the Ergo)? A hiking frame? What do you want to use it for? How old is your baby/child? The large chains, as mentioned, have consultants who, at least theoretically, know the merchandise.

Metrominis in NYC might help you if you ever go there. I would look for a babywearing meeting local to you or search for a carrier/ cloth dipaer store local to you. I'll see what I can find for you. What type of carrier do you think interests you?
You can also always start with a moby or sleepywrap. They are not too pricey or too difficult to use.

I really don't know what type of carrier I am looking for. I'm pregnant with #3, due any day. I really didn't know about any newborn/infant baby carriers until Imamother, and I don't know anyone IRL who uses one, but I think it would be a huge help to have one.
I want more like a sling, pouch, wrap then a Baby Bjorn.
I'm thinking a pouch may be the easiest to just buy and use with a newborn. And its not too much money.
I'm just nervous about using it wrong and injuring the baby. Thats why I'd love to go some where that I can get some guidance.

I see you're kind of implying that babywearing is generally not done in Lakewood. Is there a reason?
I'm just being curious...

I seriously don't know how I would have managed my first few weeks when my second was born if I wasn't wearing him around the house--he was so fussy and my toddler demanded so much attention, wearing the baby was the only logical solution and it was great for everyone--including my husband because it meant that when he came home, the house was somewhat in order and there was dinner being warmed up instead of a stressed out wife with a crying baby in a swing and a toddler creating havoc.
Which leaves me wondering why more people--especially with large families don't wear their babies!

she wrote that the baby product stores in Lakewood are not good sources of information on baby wearing...how she doubts the women who work in the store ever wore them...and how she doesn't know anyone in lakewood she can ask to show her how to use one.

For a newborn you want either a sling or a wrap. Really little ones don't have the head control necessary for a pouch, and some of them (like mine) are so tiny they don't meet the minimum size requirements! (DS#2 was so small that he would have fallen through the leg hole if I'd tried using my Snugli style one at the beginning.)

manhattanmom - I don't think I've ever seen anyone in Lakewood outside wearing a baby carrier (other then a Baby B'jorn style). I don't live in a development with lots of young couples so it could be thats why. Where I live there are lots of older families, with lots of kids in all ages, but the mothers tend to not wear carriers, I'm not sure why not. Someone recently told me she saw someone in the aim v'yeled here wearing one - but thats all I've heard of it here.

Marion - thanks for the info regarding the pouch. My 2 babies were so far 8 lbs and ll lbs at birth - and I'm carrying huge now so I'm not worried about a small baby - but if it doesn't support the head enough then that would not work.

I was looking at the movies and images on http://www.hotslings.com/baby_slings - that is how I got the idea for the pouch. It looked so much simpler then having to deal with adjusting a sling or wrap. But because I've never tried any it could be I'm totally off base. I'm thinking of ordering online - so I'd like something that will be super simple to adjust and put the baby in - and that it would be impossible to hurt the baby.

I think she means pouch in terms of a snugli, etc -- a structured carrier, and not what a pouch sling is (fitted to size instead of a ring sling). I believe pouch slings can be used for a newborn in the proper position.

Regarding baby wearing in Lakewood, I can't speak specifically to the city, but I was discussing it with a neighbor who is from there, and she only will wear her baby in her home because it's not refined to wear her baby outside, she says. But she did say her carrier is a bright color; I wonder if she would wear her baby if she had a more muted wrap. I don't know.
So I wonder if there are more people who do wear the baby in the house when I actually feel there is a larger need (trying to get laundry, cooking done, etc) vs outside when my hands are usually more available (or I use a stroller; I'm not that "crunchy" Razz)

I had a pouch for my first--I didn't wear him as a newborn--I started wearing him when he was 4 or 5 months and I needed to take him on errands where a stroller wasn't practical--I guess him being the first meant Mommy has her hands available ALL day at home...
When my second was born, I tried the pouch and he hated it. He just didn't feel secure in it. As a newborn he needed to keep his arms and legs all folded up against me (I guess like being swaddled). I bought a wrap and used it for 2 months both in and out of the house. It was definitely a worthwhile purchase. When he was 3 months old he began to feel more relaxed in the pouch and I used it more when I went out.

I think maybe I meant a sling instead of a pouch - like this:

Is this something that you can just buy online.

A pouch sling can definitely be bought online. It's hard to feel it for yourself, so read reviews (thebabywearer.com has great reviews -- you can sign up without worry that they'll send you spam). Either way, whether you buy online or in a real store, it's worth it to read a lot of reviews, because if you don't have your baby there with you then you'll find it hard to see for yourself it it works, and you can't just try one on for a few minutes. It might start bothering you after an hour, while others will be more comfortable for longer. It's not a one thing is perfect for all, unfortunately.

I would also mention that buying a pouch sling at this stage in pregnancy might be hard since you can't get a good measurement of size between shoulder and hip to make sure you have one that is not too tight or too loose for you (that's why my first carrier was a ring sling -- it's adjustable. But 1)it's not a very good brand and 2)it was just too bulky for me to like for all the time use. Worked well as a starter. I also find slings are not my favorite past a certain stage because all the weight is on one shoulder, but for nursing a newborn, it worked well for me.)
