I was wondering if anyone has heard of the name Kaylee for girl? I read online that it comes from the hebrew work "Keli" as in "vessel". and that a talented person is often called a "Keli". I really like the meaning and love that the name also sounds like something english. But there a member of my family with the name Kayla. Kayla is spelled with a "kuff" (while we would spell Kaylee with a chuff") and has a completely different meaning, but my husband thinks it may sound too similar. Agree or disagree?

When you say someone in your family is named Kayla, are you referring to one of your kids, or to a neice? Kayla and Kaylee sound pretty similar to name two sisters.. but if it's a cousin or another relative, I think it's ok.. But listen to other people's advice--that's just my little opinion.

Isn't a vessel a kli (with a shva)? Kayli seems to be a mispronounciation.

It also seems like you are trying too hard to copy the secular name.

I think it is too similar, if you are you specifically don't want to call her the same name as your sister.

That shouldn't be a problem. I know plenty of people who have given their children the same name as one of the parent's siblings.

However, as I wrote above I don't like the name for other reasons.

Kaylee, is a knickname for kaila. Kli with a kaf, is going to mispronounced or assumed to be wrong by everyone. Most people will assume her name is Kaila.

Yes, this is actually a pet peeve of mine... I'm guessing that since the plural is keilim, people assume that the singular is keili, when it's really kli.

Drives me nuts!

As far as a name, I've only heard of Kaylee (whatever spelling) being a nickname for Kaila, and spelled with a kuf.

I think the mispronunciation came about because people had e's to indicate the presence of a shva. You know- Shemuel/Shmuel, Pareve/Parve & Keli/kli. Not that it becomes more correct with the explanation.

Sounds like the American form of Kayla, like Chavy for Chava, Moyshie for Moysheh etc.

if you dislike the "americanization" of names, why did you nickname your dd that way? BTW- so many of my European relatives have names like that & none of them have any kesher with america.

I don't hate all "I" ending. I just dislike those sounding weird or artificial. Mati is (with Tilda) the"official" nickname for Mathilde in the Salonician community for a century at least. Don't assume when you don't know.
